Q: An issue with my iMac

I'm hoping someone can help, I have an iMac that won't boot when i select my user (my sons user works ok) I was trying to drag a huge file to an external hard drive then it seems i accidentally dropped it onto the desk top. The beach ball was spinning and spinning so I then shut it down from the power switch at the back. Since then i can not open or close any file once i log into my user. Ive done an apple hardware test which gave an error 4M0T/4/40000003:HDD-1319. I'm not sure if this is related

The hardware test error is related to the hard disk fan motor. Make an appointment and take it in for service.

Thanks Mike,

doesnt seem to be my main issue though. I think I might have to somehow save all my files to an external hard drive then wipe the computer and start again. I have access through my sons profile but not through mine. Any ideas how to do it?

If you have another Mac available your best bet is Target Disk Mode How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode - Apple Support
