Q: Back up first for upgrade 10.6.8 to latest

I want to back up my OS and music to an external hardrive usb.

i asked a similar question a month or so ago but a few things have changed.

here are the specifics of what I'd like to accomplish and need advice please.

1. I have an external usb hardrive. I want to back up the OS (10.6.8) and music (iTunes) on the external hardrive.

i Only want to backup in case the update to el capitan does not run smoothly. I am trying to install on the very last minimally required iMac ....so this is risky but just meets apples requirements. Mid 2007 iMac with 4ghz ram.

2. Will time machine back up 10.6.8 and iTunes via time machine? I don't want to have to purchase cloning software at this time if time machine will back upnmy OS and iTunes music.

3. Should I wipe the iMac after backing up and before attempting to upgrade to el capIran? Or keep the OS as is and try to upgrade from 10.6.8 to el capitan.?

4. Can someone send me the exact Apple link to el capitan. The exact version I need when updating from 10.6.8 to el capitan

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I would not suggest it until you actually try that your install disk really works. You have to remember: unless you have a backup, it may be deleted/erased by a glitch.

If you have a full install DVD of 10.6 you do not need 10.5 (full install meaning not an update, but the full system).

If there is a major software problem with your computer, then yes, you should be able to erase and reinstall. If your internal drive "breaks", you can't do anything with it. All hard drives fail - some sooner, some later. If it fails, it is not usable any longer. That would be a hardware issue which can't be fixed by reinstalling software.

A full install disk is either a disk that the computer came with or a retail disk.Which version is it? 10.6.3?

Since I don't have 10.6 full install disc just 10.6.3 would my 10.6.8 backup that's on my external hardrive made with time machine to restore me 10.11.3 in a software failure?

The install disc that is 10.6.3 is a full install disc. Its should be a gray one. You say Apple sent it to you so thats the one.  There are no 10.6.8 install disc's - 10.6.8 was just the latest update that came out for SL. If your hard drive ever fails you can just restore back to the latest OS X in this case 10.11 you don't have to go back to SL and then to 10.11.

so in case of hardrive failure. I'd reinstall 10.6.3 disc apple sent me and go to to 10.11? Yes ?

    does this makes sense?

One last time as this has been explained over an over. If the hard drive fails you can reinstall Snow Leopard or El Capitan you don't have to install 10.6 first. If your running 10.11 and the hard drive goes out you simply have the hard drive replaced and restore from the 10.11 backup on time machine.

    Hello, rkaufmann87,

I have to upgrade my Mac Book Pro currently running OSX 10.6.8, 4 GB, 2.8 GHz original Mac Book Pro due to pending issues of unsupported Chrome browser

All is functioning well, and I use this beloved machine for simple browsing school, and personal files, pictures, limited iTunes from home.

Most of my portable, daily grunt work must be on the "other" platform.

Barring any catastrophic hardware issues, I just need to keep this updated and running for Chrome and backed up until I go

for my next Mac hardware "investment" in another year or two.

    1. What "next OSX" do you recommend for min. user learning curve, least expense, and simplicity for the short term?

    2. Can you step this beginner through, using Time Machine back up (as stated above) using external hard drive before doing so?

Procedurally I encrypted my user account using File Vault when I first set up my Mac.

I'm getting a message that File Vault won't allow a backup when I'm logged in as the user... so I assume I need another step or two added to the Time Machine source you referenced?

    Thanks!

Would you please start your own thread rather than making someone else's more confusing.

As for "having" to upgrade because of your browser: obviously there must be a very serious reason for you to need to use Chrome?

I guess any part of the hardware could fail and that's another issue....

i was confused about my software backups that I have backed up via time machine .....OS versions 10.6.8 and 10.11.3 ( not being just 10.11)

but 10.11(.3 )would that work at restoring my OS or would I need to install a different version of software by a different method?

    I'm talking same goes for 10.6.(3)...not 10.6

especially if if I had to start all over by wiping my iMacs software/drive...

im trying to figure out if I even need to keep these time machine backups versions on my external hardrive. (This hardrive is a usb external with 2 TB. It has 3 partitions and two of the partitions each have two different OS backups ...theres more than enough space and kind of a waste for such a large drive considering I will only back up on this drive just this once. I had planned on copying the backups from this external hardrive to another external hardrive at a future date. As I mentioned I'm just interested in mainly the OS being backed up.

10.6.8 and 10.11.3. I only backed up once and plan on only one back up in case of needing to re-install OS software due to failure.

i back up my music, pictures and other important documents independently on several external hardrives but never the OS's
