Error 53 means you should look at these articles:
Get help with iOS update and restore errors - Apple Support
If you see error 53 or can't update or restore your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
Has there ever been any service done to this device?

Feb 7, 2016 10:28 AM in response to Bigandy85by gail from maine,You would only be able to see the photos if you imported them to the computer. As TJBUSMC indicated, if you only did the backup, then you would have no way to view them.
You can restore that backup to a different iOS device, but that would be the only way to be able to view the contents of that backup:
Restore from an iCloud or iTunes backup - Apple Support
Best of luck,

The photos should be in the backup, yes. Now you just need to solve the Error 53 issue or use another device.
