Q: Setting up family share without owning a MAC

My kids are under 13, they got iPad's through their school, but having an issue registering the iPad the way the school wants it setup. My wife and I don't own any apple products. But according to the website Set up Family Sharing - Apple Support we as the parents need to create an Apple ID, that is done.

Downloaded iTunes as one of the help topics through the school website. Created an iCloud account, but are unable to activate it due to us not owning any apple products. The school iPad's are setup to not allow the iCloud login or purchases through iTunes, but they require an Apple ID to allow the school pushed apps to go through onto the iPad's.

My kids school is of no help with setting up their Apple ID's, they are expecting us to pay money to get any Apple product to set this up. I have spent close to 3 hours a day for the past 4 days trying to figure this out. I even went as far as calling the Apple support and they told me to create an Apple ID for myself then hung up the phone on me.

I'm at my wits end trying to get these stupid iPad's setup for my kids. And I'm about ready to send them back to their school and tell them to invest in Android Tablets, they cause no headaches for us.

No Windows PC support. iOS device or Mac only.

You can use the iPads themselves to set up a family, which is only to create the special Apple ID for a child under 13.

Are you able to share the school's requirements here, in case we can be of further help?

    PALCS iPad setup guide

There is an overview and instructions on activating the device. But the problem that I have is with the instructions on registering an Apple ID.

    1. After activating your device, you should receive a pop-up prompting you to sign in to iTunes to allow palcs.jamfcloud.com to manage and install apps. palcs.jamfcloud.com is our solution for managing student iPads.

Students can also register their Apple ID on the iPad in Settings>iTunes & App store.

2.PALCS recommends that families follow one of the following methods to ensure their student has an Apple ID.

    a. If your child is 13 years old or over, guide them through the creation of their own Apple ID using their @stu.palcsmail.org email address.

    b. If your child is under the age of 13, create an Apple ID on their behalf using their @stu.palcsmail.org email address.

    c. If there is an iPad, iPhone, or iPod in the home along with a MAC, parents can leverage Apple's Family Sharing. This enables parents to monitor what content their children attempt to acquire on the iPad.

    d. Please Note: without an Apple ID, studens will be unable to receive any apps or books purchased by PALCS.

    3. After successfully registering your Apple ID to the device an app called Self Service will install. Self Service is our one stop shop for apps, books and other content.

Update your iPad's iOS version only after you have fully registered your Apple ID with your device. An indicator that the Apple ID registration process is complete is the automatic installation of the YouTube app.

These are the instructions that we received. And from what I can tell, it does conflict with the Apple terms and conditions for the age requirements if we put in our age instead of the students. This is what is causing an issue. We have been waiting for their tech support to contact us since Feb 3rd on how to get this setup properly. They are only open M-F until 4 pm EST.

I forgot to mention that I was able to talk to a friend whom does own Apple products, was able to register the iCloud, but it wouldn't let me set up the child's Apple ID to match what the school wants. It wanted to through in the @icloud.com at the end.

NOTE: this is not legal advice by any means... merely my take on your situation.

Although Apple's T&C do seem to require a user to be 13 or older, they do allow for "unless you are under 13 and your Apple ID was provided to you as a result of a request by an approved educational institution"

Would your school qualify for that? Otherwise it does seem they are coaching you to violate Apple's T&C, which they likely wouldn't do.

So, this doesn't seem like a conflict after all. As you also point out, an under 13 Apple ID create via family Sharing will be an @icloud.com ID, which is not what the school wants. I don't think Family Sharing is needed in your case.

I also see this at the end of the Family Sharing page... which seems to be what you would be doing via the school's instructions.
