Q: copy printer settings

Hi,

Two MacBooks, identical in every respect.

I bought one two months ago for work.  Added it to the network and I can print with it.

The second arrived today, and I cannot, try as I might, add it to the network to print.  Let me be more precise: getting it onto the domain isn't a problem.  But I can't add the network printer.

So I google, and come across this.  Transfer Printer Settings to Another Mac

I copy the /etc/cups/cupsd.conf file across to the new computer, and also the file (which in fact is the printer name) in /etc/cups/ppd across to the new Mac.  I reboot, and still, the printer isn't there.    I also take the HD/Library/Preferences/org.cups.printers.plist file and put it in the same place on the second Mac.

No luck.

The problem is that I'm not Windows admin, and even my Windows colleagues don't have a clue what protocol the printer uses.  They just add it on the Windows laptops,,and it works.

Mac mini, iOS 7.0.4, 16 GB RAM, 1 TB Fusion Drive

    Hello D.C.,

It sounds like you are able to get on your local network fine but your new MacBook is not seeing the printer.

I'm not sure about the work around in the Tiger thread you link, but please try the various methods in this article.

If still having issues, could you give more details on the setup and printer information?

Hi there.  Thanks for this.  The printer is a Sharp MX-5112N.

We can now print, but not in colour.  I have downloaded the printer driver from the Sharp website (MX-C26_1501b_Mac108-1010.dmg), but no joy.
