Feb 11, 2016 7:03 AM in response to Drjoe378by Allen A,Hello Drjoe378,
I understand that you're not seeing the AirPlay icon in iTunes on your Mac. If you've verified that your firewall is off or that the issue occurs regardless of the state of your firewall, there are a few more items that can help return your ability to connect to AirPlay devices.
- Check that you have the latest version of iTunes and Apple TV software.
- Connect your computer and your other device to the same Wi-Fi network. If you're using Ethernet, connect both devices to the same router or hub. If you're using both Wi-Fi and Ethernet, connect your AirPlay device to the same router that your computer uses for Wi-Fi.
- Restart your computer, AirPlay device, and network router.
- Since some Airplay devices include an on/off option for AirPlay, look for the option in Settings and make sure the feature is on. Check the device's user guide for more information.
All my best.

Apr 1, 2016 11:48 AM in response to Drjoe378by Mdot,Apparently, AirPlay does not work over Ethernet, at least not with Mac OS X 10.11.4 (El Capitan). It used to, but now you have to have WiFi on to have the icon appear in iTunes, to have the AirPlay devices (Apple TV, etc.) to appear in AirFoil, and to have your iPhones sync to iTunes. Not sure why, as not everyone wants to run their iMac on WiFi. Seems like a new "feature" Apple has added to one of its recent updates; it is definitely not appreciated here.

Apr 11, 2016 6:52 PM in response to Mdotby ChazThePhoenix, since upgrading to 10.11.4 I have the exact opposite problem....my airplay is not showing up as an option over wifi.
I have an older (admittingly) MBP (late 2008). Last weekend I played some music off my iTunes through my Apple TV 3...THEN I upgraded to 10.11.4. Now the airplay option under sound output is GONE....
whats going on?
