Q: iMac crashing daily, why?

Quite frustrated as to why my iMac (early 2009) is crashing everyday, sometimes twice a day. Here are the technical details:

Using OS X vs 10.8.5

Processor - 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 duo

Memory - 8 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512 MB

I read that upgrading the OS would help but I use Adobe PS CS5 daily and can not afford to risk having problems using

that software. I can not afford (financially) to buy a new computer right now and prefer not to use cloud software.

Also, keeping in mind that perhaps it might be a memory issue, when I am using PS or Firefox, I try to not use them both

at the same time but even that doesn't matter. And, it seems to happen when using either program, not one or the other.

Maybe I should stop using Firefox for awhile and switch to Safari? Perhaps that would help?

Finally, is it possible just to upgrade to a newer version (compatible w/ PS CS5) w/o having to go to El Capitan?

Any suggestions out there?

Thank you in advance ~

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Thank you Eric, I will look into this option. I don't want to jinx myself, but, my computer has not crashed over the past

three days. I wish I knew what I was doing differently, but, just glad that it's been stable for now.

    panic(cpu 1 caller 0xffffff7f9d35c8a1): NVRM[0/2:0:0]: Read Error 0x0061002c: CFG 0x00000000 0x00000000 0x00000000, BAR0 0xd2000000 0xffffff810edad000 0x094700a1, D0, P3/4

Based on these 2 panics, I am inclined to suspect you have a hardware problem.  I do not know this for a fact.  However, the TLB is the Translation Lookaside Buffer (basically the heart and soul of the virtual memory hardware).  It should not be timing out.  And the CPU should not be ignoring interrupts.

The NVRM is the non-volatile random access memory where the Mac stores things like your preferred boot device, and other information that is suppose to survive powering off the Mac.  You should not be getting read errors on the NVRAM.

I suggest you make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple Store and have then evaluate the hardware (or an Authorized Apple Support tech).  You could print out the panic reports and take them with you.  Backup, backup, backup before taking the Mac in for evaluation.

Thanks Bob. I do plan to get this computer to a genius bar for an assessment. And most, if not all, of my data

has been backed up on an external drive as well as a cloud source. Thank you again for offering your take on

    what might be the problem.

Not that it helps with the Kernel Panics, but I am also hobbling along with Photoshop CS5, and Aperture, and they still seem to work with El Capitan.  To stretch my options a bit longer, I have a removable, secondary boot drive with OS X Yosemite and PS CS5, and Aperture, installed.  I have been testing PS and Aperture in my Mac Book Pro running El Capitan to make sure both programs work before upgrading my desktop.

I found the following link where Apple advertises OS X 10.6, 10.7 & 10.8 "for sale".  I didn't drill down far enough to see what the cost of a free OS upgrade might be.

    http://www.apple.com/shop/help/downloadable_software

I have been experimenting with an open source, image editing program called darktable to fill in for Photoshop and Aperture when they no longer function. It is a steep learning curve, but there is no monthly subscription and no Internet connection required.

    Good luck.
