Q: Handoff and AirDrop not working in El Capitan

After upgrading to OS X 10.11 El Capitan, my Handoff and AirDrop stopped working between iOS 9.0.2 on iPhone 5S and my MacBook Pro Late 13. I've tried logging out of iCloud account on both devices numerous times, it didn't help.

For my friend with MacBook Air and iPhone 5S with same iOS version it works flawlessly.

Did anyone encounter similar issue, and if so, how did you solve it?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, iOS 9.0.2, plus iPhone 5S with iOS 9.0.2

It does work, sort of. I am getting incoming handoff. Outgoing is not working as well. I do see errors in console:

Better than before. I am not sure, why Apple Engineering cannot get this resolved.

After rebooting another Mac, it now works bidirectionally on both Mac OS X and iOS.

    Great hint! Thanks you!

    Hi Guys.

I finally fixed the problem. The problem lies beneath your Wifi Network.

    Troubleshooting done

I tried connecting my Macbook Pro and iPhone on my iPad Personal hotspot and the airdrop works perfectly.

    Fix to the problem

    1. Turnoff the firewall on your router.

    2. Off your wifi on Macbook and turn it back on

    3. Problem Solved

Ahhh man this problem has been driving me nuts for about two weeks now. I did find a temporary, if annoying, solution though.

After reading someone's response that said when they went to the iStore their Airdop suddenly worked on the stores wifi I thought I would try while not connected to any wifi networks. This totally worked, but it's annoying because it means deleting your wifi network from your mac and from your phone and then sending the files and then re-entering your password on both devices to carry on with your life.

    Like I said, really annoying.

This confirms that the problem lies somewhere in El Capitan though, and has something to do with wifi network settings or protocols. My Airdrop used to work fine before El Capitan when connected to any wifi network, but ironically it wouldn't work when I wasn't on a wifi network.

I knew the problem was lying with the Mac when I could see my iPhone with my iPad and vice versa, but the Mac couldn't see either of them.

I'm a huge fan of mac but I must say that since this problem has come about I've found myself feeling incredibly annoyed with Apple because not only does it not seem to be getting solved, but there is literally nothing that can be done to fix it on the users side.

As someone who use to use Airdrop as part of my day to day activities in order to share photographic or videographic previews with clients, it really inconveniences me. Yes I can email or iMessage the files, but that means wasting redundant space on my devices/email servers.

Hopefully they will fix this with the next upgrade, which might be in who knows how long.

fyi I tried the following in my journeys of frustration:

    • logged in and out of icloud
    • changed icloud passwords on all devices
    • reset network settings (as best I could, seems like you can't completely reset it, I tried what a few sites told me and found that my wifi settings were still intact despite my best efforts)
    • done all sorts of recommended rubbish in terminal that I found on a variety of threads, none of which made any difference
    • deleted the bluetooth pref file

We're the same in our business.  Airdrop was brilliant for our customers to upload their photos, but now we have to revert back to using cables, emails and aftermarket apps etc.  It makes us look stupid when a client sees what a faff it is to do such a simple task.

We've used Apple products for years in the photographic trade, due to their reliability and quality, yet it seems a huge shame that Apple are doing nothing to resolve this problem.  I've always been the 1st to defend Apple products and software against the usual nasty stuff, but this is not good business.

I can't Airdrop to my MacbookPro OR my BFs iPhone 5! The airdrop between phones was always spotty but the Mac was completely reliable. It started about 2 weeks ago, I have not had any updates to my phone or Mac. I've tried turning on/off airdrop, wifi, bluetooth, rebooting...all in various combinations for both devices. I now use this as my main method of moving pics off my phone so I would love any assistance.

I tried everything in this thread. No luck. What did work was this tool I found on Github. https://github.com/dokterdok/Continuity-Activation-Tool

It says it was designed for earlier versions of El Capitan (I'm using 10.11.3), though it still fixed my issue.

Have you try resetting your network settings or turn off the feature then toggle it back on? May want to check out this article http://appletoolbox.com/2016/02/airdrop-not-working-7-tips/

I tried pretty much everything in this thread to no avail. I was running osx 10.11.3 and ios 9.2.1. Removing all the of recommend library files throughout this post did not help, as well as checking different configurations and signing in and out of iCloud on all devises. What did work for me was creating a brand new user account on my mac book. Everything worked fine under the new user account so I moved my files to it and deleted the corrupt account. I hope this helps someone out there as I spent way to much time going in circles on this.
