Q: Convert iPhoto Events to Photos Albums

I just installed Photos on my iMac.  I have taken a LOT of time making Events in iPhoto.  Is there a way for me to convert the Events I made with iPhoto into Albums for the new Apple Photos software?  It would take me a LONG time to make new Albums and then copy all the Event images into the New Albums.

Is there a way to automate this?

Good that it works for you, but I would like to learn how to use "Photos" without anything added.

Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.

When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there is a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder.

To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

    PsimulatedEvents.jpg

NOTE: It's been reported by several users that if the Event albums are moved out of the iPhoto Library folder in the sidebar they may disappear.  It's not widespread but several users have reported that issue.  Therefore, if you want to assure that you keep those Event albums don't move them outside the iPhoto Events folder.

There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File âž™ New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

Albums and smart albums can be sorted by Title, by Date with oldest first and by Date with newest first.

Also tell Apple what missing features you'd like restored or new features added in Photos via Apple-Photos Feedback.

I waited until all the issues with office seemed to be resolved and I saw people upgrading without too many problems.  I upgraded to El Capitan a few  days ago and everything seems to be working OK except Photos.  I have 9600 photos sorted very carefully into 60 events on IPhoto.  None of them are in the Photo app.  The only thing I can see are the photo stream albums and about half of the photos that were in photo stream on my phone.  I can still use IPhoto and all of my photos & events are there.  I also have many events on my IPhone that I move when I sync my phone to my Macbook.

Many of your posts said that the photos would automatically move to Photo and show up on the side bar under IPhoto Events - but that is not listed on my sidebar?  Any suggestions?  I do not want to pay for Cloud storage - I back up all my old photos onto mini hard drives so I can find them when I need them after I remove them from my MacBook.

Did you migrate your iPhoto Library to Photos?

no - I was never asked or prompted to do that?  Are there steps to do that?  Will my events migrate intact into Albums with the same names?  some of the posts I have read indicate that the photos are all mixed up - I have to many photos to resort them.  Should I just keep using IPhoto?  Don't want a big mess to straighten out.  Thanks for your help

Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch Photos. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'

This will migrate your iPhoto to Library but also leave it untouched, so if you don't like it you can just launch iPhoto and pick up where you left off.

worked like a charm - thanks for you help - funny that when I did a search for how to move events from iPhoto to Photo - some very complicated answers came up and most complained of problems.  So glad I can keep iPhoto and go back to it if I do not like Photo.  Some old events that were empty and had been deleted came up but I just deleted them.  So easy.

Only issue - lost my screen saver - photos were in an event.  When I open System Preferences - Screen Saver and go to Photo Library - none of the stuff I migrated over is there - just there few photos that were in Photo originally - just he 50 photos from last 30 days PhotoStream.  I rebooted but still not showing up when I want to selected for my screen saver tiles.  Not a big deal but would be nice if the choices were there.

Ok.  So like many I have faced the iPhotos vs Photos conundrum ... the issue of managing an evergrowing Photo.Library eating my HD space, the issue of migrating all my iPhoto libraries on external drives to Photos and the ongoing issue of creating and managing multiple Photo.Libraries on external HDs when only one can be synched via iTunes....

I have browsed many forums and discussions and even spoken face to face with the local Geniuses and sadly found that although the Geniuses can be very helpful in debugging and installation issues they just did not have the experience or best practice tips on how to run iPhotos/Photos over an extended period of time.

However thanks to this discussion - and in particular the clarity of Terence Devlin's and Old Toad's posts .... and the discovery of another utility PowerPhotos (from fatcat software)  I have decided to embrace Photos as my path forward.  Terence and Old Toad's insight allowed me to bridge my workflow from iPhoto to Photos and hence stay aligned with Apple's direction, PowerPhotos gave me the ability to manage multiple libraries on separate devices - split/merge libraries, even migrate the iPhoto libraries I had on external devices to Photos format etc etc.  It was the missing link for me that made Photos workable without having to commit to a full blown DAM such as Lightroom etc.

I can now have a "main" or default Photo Library on my HD which syncs with my other devices via iTunes or iCloud and it is the default into which I can upload all my new photos and videos. I can then with PowerPhoto drag/drop Albums, Photos, Videos etc out of this default library into other Photo Libraries on my HD or external HDs so that I can manage my iCloud or HD disk space. I can have all my libraries visible and accessible at the same time so that I can see what is inside them and decide where its best to move the photos. This works for me.

I understand that a DAM offers much much more, but reading the many discussions I see that many people are like me, we just want an easier way to manage our family snaps and videos and at the same time stay aligned to Apple's direction. I am posting this here in the hope that my summary helps someone else avoid spending the days I have spent on researching this topic.

maybe I am missing something, but what is wrong about just moving iPhoto events from sidebar to Albums in Photos?

    thanks

    You might consider this:

Put all of you albums in a folder in the sidebar and name that folder Albums.

    Photos001.jpg

When you click on the folder you'll see your album in the window at the right:

    Highlight001.jpg

Also when you go to the albums section with the sidebar closed

    Photos004.jpg

you'll see just one item titled Albums.

    Photos003.jpg

Click on it and you'll see all of you albums.  This method helps keep the sidebar cleaner and easier to get to the projects at the bottom of the sidebar if you use the sidebar a lot.

If you never use the sidebar then this method won't be for you.

What is loose chronology? It's either chronological or not. Don't understand how it would be loose? Explain please.

I have over 150 "albums" that are one photo each in the iPhoto events. They are called Nov 23 2002, Dec 1 2002, Jan 5 2004. It is awesome. I also have quadruplicates of photos that I don't want, and can't find photos that I do want. Everytime I come into PHOTOS to look for something it is truly mindboggling ... as time has gone on, I really just keep downloading photos so they exist somewhere and have practically given up trying to sort anything. I just spent about 2 hrs just scrolling and swiping to the point my finger(s) hurt.

I have this same issue, but i have 1400 Events, and many are single pictures, and i don't need these as albums.... is there another way to fix this and not make albums????

    Thank you.
