Q: Item not available - this item cannot be played?

Since the last update, half of my Apple Music has now been greyed out and gives error messages (see below). Paid up member of Apple Music iPhone 6 iOS 9.2. Any thoughts? TIAimage.png

I had exact same problem, all songs on iMac in iTunes played, but some greyed out on iphone with response "item not available". A few minutes ago I plugged the iPhone in to iMac and let it sync. Took 2 tries, but it finally synced and all songs play on iPhone now.

My solution to this problem was the same as yours. New iPhone 6 128gb, most of my music collection (~50gb) is ripped CDs in my iTunes. I synced once and most music on my phone said item not found, so I just synced a second time and now all my music seems to be on my phone.

    Hi Voolay.

I have the same problem. Very frustrating.

I don't see Update iCloud Music Library as a choice under File. Even when pressing ALT. You say press ALT. Press alt when? While holding down anything? I'm in iTunes 12.2.2. It says I am up to date. I'm on OSX 10.7.5

    Thanks,

    Ron

You have to go to FILE then LIBRARY then the option to Update iCloud Music Library will appear. It is not in the actual FILE menu.

    Hi Swandy,

I'm experiencing the same issue - greyed out songs. My iTunes version is the latest - 12.3.2.35 - and, like Ron, I also do not have "Update iCloud Music Library" as an option when clicking on File in iTunes.  The options when choosing File>Library are: Organize Library; Export Library; Import Playlist; Export Playlist; Get Album Artwork.

When you say, "It is not in the actual FILE menu," which other FILE option are you speaking of?  Could the issue be connected to not have an Apple Music account?

    Thanks for your help!

Yes I see the same as Venus under File>Library. That's why I was wondering if ALT is pressed with another key to get  Update ICloud Music Library to come up.

    Thanks

    Ron

I'm relatively sure the only way this can be fixed is by subscribing to itunes match for $25/year, which is pretty terrible, but its WAY better than carrying around a second device.

Well, I have a long story about this, plus the solution.

One day I turn on my iPhone and get the message "Subscribe to Apple Music!" I was already subscribed, so I clicked on the link to see what happens. Sure enough, it tells me that I am already subscribed. I think nothing of it until later, when I find most of my music (mostly ripped from my own CDs) grayed out and the message Abdulziz quotes, "Item not available."

I tried to sync. It would not sync. I tried restoring the software on my iPhone. Still would not sync. So I called Apple and was on the phone with a senior advisor for six hours with a few short breaks. She could not solve it. Sent a program to record processes on my computer and said she would send it to software engineers and get back to me within 48 hours. (She also promised me a $100 gift certificate when it was solved).

No reply after 48 hours. I called Apple, and they said the engineers were still working on it. So I tried a few things myself. First I tried using home sharing to move the music. No dice, the little moving circle got hung up halfway through. I tried sharing the music to an old computer I have, and then syncing my iPhone. The music shared ok, but again would not sync (got hung up on "Preparing to copy," or "Applying changes.")

This told me that the problem was with my iPhone or my music library. I plugged a (very) old iPod touch into my computer to see if it would sync my iTunes library. Sure enough, in 10 minutes the whole library was synced. Then I tried it with my iPad. Again, 10 minutes did it.

So I plugged in my iPhone, clicked "Restore software," and then "Restore as new iPhone." I ALSO declined to copy settings (which was the difference from the first restore). Then, as soon as the iPhone was responding at all, I synced all of my music successfully. I made sure "Show Apple Music" was off, and that "iCloud music" was off. I will never use either of those two monsters again!! Then I completed the sync and added my apps back, and now everything works.

Apple reports that software engineers are still working on it, even though i told them it is solved. They will not give me my $100 until the engineers check in.

I'm going to subscribe to Spotify.

Out of 200+ CDs I have imported into my library over the past few years, I only recently noticed that some of the CDs (10-12 of them) showed up with song titles that were grayed out.  Then today I created a new Playlist on my MacBook Pro, and I could not access it on my iPhone or iPad, regardless of how many times I synced those devices with my MBP.  I pay for iTunes Match, and I believe that at some point in the last 6 months, the way it works (functionality) changed and/or an iTunes upgrade overwrote at least one of my iTunes Preferences.  Anyway, here is what resolved the problem for me.  While in iTunes, I selected Preferences from the iTunes Menu.  On the General  tab, only "Show Apple Music" was checked - although I don't even pay for Apple Music.  So, I'm thinking that must be checked by default when iTunes upgrades are installed.  The surprising thing to me was that the box under it, "iCloud Music Library" was not checked.  I don't use iCloud for everything, but I do use it for Photos, Contacts, Notes, and Music and I was pretty sure I had turned this on (selected it) in the past.  Anyway, I checked that box, clicked on "OK", and suddenly all the titles that had been grayed out - were no longer grayed out on my iPhone or iPad, and everything I wanted to download to those two devices has now downloaded - including the new playlist I created earlier today.
