Q: can you install to much ram

I have a late 2009 iMac 27.

I have updated the amount of Ram from 4 GB to 16 GB because it was going slower and slower.

When I look to the memory cleaner app I see that the the used ram is never exxeeds 6GB and the Mac is still slow.

Even when I am using more programs at one time with programs like aperture and garageband it keeps under the 6 GB.

Is there a possibility to force the use of RAM to speed up the MAC?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

RAM or Random Access Memory is where your open files and applications reside.  Since memory has a much faster read/write time than your hard drive, when you open an application or a file it gets copied from the hard drive to the memory.  If you want use more memory, open more applications and files.

Insufficient available memory isn't the only cause of slow performance.  Have you tried checking the disk for errors, booting to safe mode to isolate third party software, or using Activity Monitor to see if any processes are hogging up your CPU?

Uninstall Memory Cleaner per the developers instructions as it's likely contributing to the slowdown. OS X can manage the available ram just fine. Learn to use Activity Monitor instead Use Activity Monitor to read system memory and determine how much RAM is being used (OS X Mountain Lion and earlier) - A…

If you're running AV software uninstall that too as it's unnecessary. Perhaps run EtreCheck  and post ot's result here so we can offer some suggestions http://etrecheck.com/

Please update your TAG information. Are you using El Capitan or 10.7.4?

Get rid of the memory cleaner app.

Macs do not need "maintenance" apps that claim to clean, organize, refresh, optimize, or otherwise do anything else to the hard drive of the computer.  Memory Cleaner is no different than AVG Cleaner, CCleaner, CleanMyMac, MacKeeper, MacCleaner, and TuneMyMac in terms of being fraudulent, unnecessary crap.  Please uninstall it according to the developer's instructions.

The reason your computer was slowing down was probably due to third-party programs that you don't need, like Memory Cleaner, and not because you needed more RAM, though that might be part of it.  Please go to http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck and download EtreCheck.  Copy the status report and paste it here.
