Q: URLs not working in Safari or Mail after iOS 9.2.1

After updating my iPad Air 2 iOS 9.2.1, I experienced Safari crashing when trying to open a new tab. I solved this problem by disabling Search Engine Suggestions and Safari Suggestions in Settings, as recommended. However now, if I've done a search, I cannot open any of the links in that search. If I type a specific URL in the Search Box, then I can open the page, but am unable to sign in, use any links from that page, etc. Also, I find that I am unable to open any URL links that I receive in Mail and tapping on a link then locks up Mail... I have done a full sync to my iMac, which can sometimes rectify a problem, but it hasn't helped in this instance.

Has anyone else experienced this?

You say it, the only difference here is that my iPhone 6 (and all other iPhones and iPads in the house) work fine.

I have to use a notebook too (and have to carry it) to open links in e-mails, Safari and the IOS mail app keep crashing/freezing immediately. Backup and restore is not a real option because it takes an afternoon and half of the night to do this with my 80 Gigs on that tablet and time is very short here at the moment.

I still use the Chrome based Puffin as a browser, but I need to open links from e-mails!

Agree this situation has to be fixed asap! What's up Apple?

Can anyone imagine if this might be a hardware problem, e.g. a partly bad memory?

I think the fact that my wife's iPad worked fine after the 9.2.1 upgrade up until yesterday - when Safari links and hypertext failed exactly as my iPad failed several days ago - must mean this is a Safari problem.

Incidentally I am managing to write this reply on my iPad using Google Chrome where links work if you open as a new tab. The plain vanilla Google App also works. There the links work fine without even the open in new tap step.

Of course, the inability to open links in emails remains as we are stuck with Safari as the default browser.

Thanks for the reply, that sounds very reasonable. I am frightened by the thought, that our other devices (home and company) might follow my iPad, it is already a desaster. On the other hand, I am astonished that only this few people wrote here. Can that correlate with the Safari usage. I am a very heavy (professional) user, so maybe safari works for a limited usage time or data amount after the update to 9.2.1 and "falls" into that problem state than? Or in other words, are there users who barely used Safari but are experiencing the problem?

In addition, I think I'll have to call Apple support next week, I've got Apple care, so they should try to find an answer.

I'm having same problem in iPad Mini 4 w 64 GB of ram.

Tried suggestions below and  they don't work. Am using Chrome , Mercury, Dolphin as alternate browsers and. Cloudmagic as alternate for Mail until Safari and Mail hyperlinking is fixed. Since hyperlinking also affects Calendar, have as standby Fantastical.

This is the worse update I've seen from Apple since i bought my first iPad!

As I wrote I will call the Apple Care tomorrow.

You might want to read this post here from another thread dealing with the same problem (on iPhones).

Even a complete reset did not solve the problem there.

    Same problem here...

Restoring iPad Air 2 didn't solve the problem...

Same here but in my iphone 6s plus since installing ios 9.2.1.

I've tried absolutely everything. Even starting the iphone as a "new one". Nothing worked. I spoke with the apple care team and the only solution was to exchange my iphone since it is still under warranty. I do not want to be without phone during one or two weeks because of which is clearly a software bug (even if not recognised by apple).

    Very disappointing...

Have posted re this elsewhere, and it is obvious that the problem with the 9.2.1 upgrade is what is affecting Safari.

Bit concrned that the Support Team actually told somebody to change their device as it was still under warranty.

Does this suggest that they dont have a clue as to a fix?

Add me to the list of users with same problem. My wife and I each have iPad Air 2, both upgraded wit iOS 9.2.1 but this problem is ONLY on her iPad. I am operating normally without issues. I have done the recommended settings changes and tried the reset once, taking hours to try to reset all her settings. I wish Apple would address this as an issue and advise how they intend to correct.

But if I start as a "new device" or with factory settings safari works again, when I restore the backup it fails....

So changing the iPhone is not needed it has to be something with 9.2.1

(also here iphone 6 iOS 9.2.1 Links don't work between Mail and Safari)

    Hi

I don't know if you have the solution to this, I can tell you what I did and the results of my testing:

    1. Iphone connected to iTunes

    2. Restore device

    3. Restore backup from iTunes

    4. DON'T WORK. Seems that the backup saved the wrong thing that causes the malfunction

    Test 2

    1. Iphone NOT connected to iTunes

    2. Restore iphone (clear data and settings).

    3. Restore from an old backup in iCloud

    4. All works perfect.

    I hope this help you

    Best Regards

    HI,

held power button and and home button down until apple logo appeared on black screen, then when home screen loaded everything was fine and IOS was 9.2.1.

dont know what happened during original upload, but this fixed my problem, and hopefully will help others.

I hope Apple are going to do an iOS update sooner rather than later; this current update is so full of bugs... My husband's iPad 3 started wanting the wifi password EVERYTIME he turns it on...

    @sharot1999 and @pclemares and all

    Hi folks,

tried the reboot with power and home button at least 10 times, removed all running apps before und deleted cache, no success.

When I resume all the posts, it seems that the bug will be backed up on iCloud and on iTunes. So you may try an old backup from one of the sources and get a (temporar) fix, but you will probably loose some or a even a lot of data. That is no way for me because so much content on my iPad changes every day, and the iCloud Backup runs every night.

I canceled my date at the Apple store today, because of the information that a new device will not solve the problem when the backup is restored.

In fact the easiest solution would be an IOS update to a new version.

One should never give up the hope....

Never had problems with IOS 6.xx and 7.xx imho many problems started with 8 and have not been solved in 9, e.g. this asking for WIFI password all the time ( which can be solved by one or two reeboots and/or a router reset), annoying in any case.

    Stephan

PS: Is there Apple staff who reads those threads?
