Jan 9, 2016 10:29 AM in response to Pointebasicby RUBiBatti,First of all:
This is the first time that I write something here because of the strange issue.
Short summary:
1. After Upgrading a 4s (of my mother, I've got a 6s) from iOS 7.1.3 to 9.1 the camera app stopped taking photographs by the rear and front camera.
2. A so called repair shop (see more below) found a solution for that.
3. After upgrading the 4s form iOS 9.1 to 9.2 yesterday, the same issue was back.
4. I've found a solution to take photographs on the 4s by a third party app (colorburn). It also works after a reboot and seems to be stable over one day. But it is not possible to take photos on the iOS camera app at the same time! I can prove that by a video.
5. I'm hopefully waiting for an iOS-solution and I'm also ready for an Apple call. What the colorburn guys can do - Apple can do it too for sure.
Some more details:
1. While the OTA-Upgrade the device crashed. I know now that OTA is stupid for such a big step.
2. I couldn't restart the device by the standby-button. So I had to push the home and the standby-button. The same happened after reboots.
3. Then the system was running good, but after some days we realized that it wasn't possible to take photographs on both cameras, rear and front. It was always possible to take videos instead. But this wasn't acceptable. So I finally found this support-thread and tried many things.
4. One day my mother decided to bring the phone to a repair shop. After getting it back I decided to never do the same because they've "stolen" her (70 years old...) half of her storage and made 16 gb of 32 gb by origin. But the camera-app worked fine... they pretended to have changed the camera. So my mother was fine with the solution (100 €...).
5. Then iOS reminded her several times to update to iOS 9.2 we decided to take this risk... what a bad decision at all:
The camera-app stopped to support to take photographs again. In that moment it was difficult for me to control my feelings on this really bad issue... This was yesterday. I was finding me searching for used devices on eBay. But over night I thought, that it was time to try it again with other camera apps:
6. I've installed half a dozen of camera apps by the family sharing. The first one didn't work, so I tried a second one that I got some days before: COLORBURN. And it works very well now, even after a reboot. And for the reboot it was enough now to pull the standby-button. Some other apps also worked, but not by the loudness-button. And the iOS-camera-app still doesn't work. So what might be the conclusion on that in my opinion?
The function ended twice on upgrading the iOS. And taking photographs is possible now on third party apps, but not on the iOS one. So if they can do so like COLORBURN ( Thank you very much for that app, guys !! ), Apple should be able to find a software-solution itself for sure.
Go for it, Apple!

Jan 11, 2016 10:13 AM in response to Pointebasicby terrencefrommarlton,Had the same problem after installing ios 9.2 on the 4s. Camera stopped working and the iphone would go completely blank sporadically. Tried doing a hard reset, tried restoring to factory settings, even called Apple support to no avail. So I took it into an Apple store and the tech guy did a factory reset and then did a firmware update. It's been 4 days and all is well! Hope this helps everyone.

Jan 13, 2016 3:58 PM in response to Pointebasicby RealCop1993,I've just updated my iPhone 5S to iOS 9.2 and my back camera don't work, black screen, while... front camera works fine. I've not took backup of the previous 8.2 version, whats should I do now? :/
I've tryed restoring, enable/disable power saver nothing work.. After reseting phone camera was working for 2-3 secs and again black screen and frozing, but that happened only once.
Should I sell it or just wait for new update?!

Jan 24, 2016 6:29 AM in response to RUBiBattiby RUBiBatti,Update to iOS 9.2.1:
I updated from iOS 9.2 to 9.2.1 on 2016/01/23. The iOS-own camera app still doesn't work on the front and rear camera. I only can see very little progress: When I swipe right to time lapse mode I can see that the function is supported as before. Swiping left back to video shows the same. If I swipe very fast back zu picture mode, I can see everything like it has to be (no black screen, but only for the front camera). But pushing the button doesn't have any effect. The photographs aren't really taken. They don't switch to the fotos app as I can see in the left below corner.
My still working solution:
colorburn-app always works fine after taking many pictures with the app. It supports both cameras and the loudness-button to take photographs.
My question to Apple:
While a third party app works fine on taking photographs I've to ask why Apple's iOS-app doesn't support this basic function. The longer this problem exists the more I've to think they're not interested in solving problems of probably not large number of issue-devices or not capable to do so... I've to encourage them to provide a solution soon with iOS 9.3 to come.

Feb 10, 2016 6:32 PM in response to Pointebasicby ivanfrombethesda,I'm having the same problem after ios9 upgrade. I have tried the following:
-Reset the phone
-Restored the phone to factory settings
-Genius Bar offered to swap out the camera and I quote the "Genius": "If it's not the camera, then its a software issue."
-New camera didn't work, but Apple Store maintained it was software issue.
They must think I'm an idiot. I hope they discover the glitch soon.

Feb 12, 2016 5:45 AM in response to ivanfrombethesdaby ivanfrombethesda,I meant to write here that Apple Store maintained that it was a hardware issue--loose connection or something. What a load of crap.

Feb 13, 2016 11:01 AM in response to Pointebasicby Ben933,Same problem here.
I have a 5s and yesterday everything worked perfect and suddenly today the back camera just stays black.
How could we fix this <.<

Feb 13, 2016 11:30 AM in response to Ben933by RUBiBatti,In my case a very clean install without restoring the backup helped to fix the problem finally. Delete the phone's data and settings and setup the phone as new device. For me it helped and works already fine. If you don't like you also can give the app "colorburn" a try which worked on my 4s while the iOS-camera-app didn't.
Finally it's proven that this isn't an (entirely) hardware issue. Instead it seems that something bad happens while the update process in combination with the existing data and settings.

Feb 13, 2016 11:33 AM in response to RUBiBattiby Ben933,I tried to reset the phone completely. Nothing works =/
Come on Apple ..

Feb 13, 2016 11:41 AM in response to Ben933by RUBiBatti,... and you really set it up as new device and didn't restore any backup?
... and you tried to install third party camera apps like colorburn?
I'm also disappointed from Apple's update politics, no doubt, but waiting on a patch in the near future might be a never ending story...
-
Feb 13, 2016 11:43 AM in response to RUBiBattiby Ben933,Yes I tried both. Taking the date from the backup and installing it as a complete new phone. Nothing helps.
its really a pitty that over 80000 people viewed this and nothing has been done

Feb 16, 2016 2:30 PM in response to Pointebasicby Mc Haggis,Took mine into Apple for troubleshooting. Apple Genius Bar told me it was a MAIN LOGIC BOARD FAILURE!
How this is related to the software update I'm not sure?
Maybe they don't know exactly whats going on or maybe they want more people to take their phones in and pay the upgrade fee to have them swapped out due to the fact that they're just outside the warranty window when they fail???
Makes you wonder!
Apple Store Manager told me getting just over 2 years from a $1000 phone was acceptable to him thats why he upgrades every 2 years!!!
SERIOUSLY he said that!
