Q: If I set up my iPad to text can I communicate with someone who does not have an apple product?  If so where do I begin the process?

If I set up my iPad to text can I communicate with someone who does not have an Apple Product?  If so, where do I start this process. She is exploring how to set up her Tablet to text to me. Is this possible?  Explicit details please…I am new at this. Thanks.

To be able to text non Apple devices on an iPad, you need an iPhone associated with the Apple ID the iPad is using.

Read the SMS section of the following support document as it deals with sending SMS  through Continuity.

Use Continuity to connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac - Apple Support

With Continuity, all the SMS and MMS text messages that you send and receive on your iPhone can also appear on your Mac, iPad, and iPod touch. You can also reply to your contacts from whichever device is closest to you, including your iPad or Mac.

I do not understand your answer.  I do not have an iPhone.  I have a Mac and iPad. My friend who I am trying to communicate with has a Smartphone other than Apples.  Is it possible for us to text communicate?  I do have a cellphone but it is just and old "clamshell" type and I did text on that to her phone.  Can we communicate now that she has a tablet and I have an iPad? Using no phones at all.

You need an iPhone to send SMS texts to non Apple devices from an iPad. SMS Texts are what you send form cell phones. Apple or non Apple.

The iPad is not capable of sending SMS on its own which is required to send text messages to other devices.

Other than that, you would need an App, that can give you a phone number to use to send SMS texts to other cell phones. . These usually have an  associated cost with them.

If your friend is using a tablet, and not a cell phone, then you would need to get a messaging app both of you are registered with, such as Skype, or Facebook Messenger or the like, this has nothing to do at all with sending SMS texts which is what you did on cell phones. both of these apps are available for a variety of tablets.  Each of you would need to download one of these apps and set up an account with the service.

Basically there are 2 different types of messages. SMS text messages which is what you send on cell phones, and an what are known as "instant messages"  not texts, which you send through services such as Skype or Facebook Messenger.
