Q: iMac Yosemite regular spinning wheel help

Hey folks,

My iMac is somewhat old, but has been such a trusty machine that I figure I'd try to save it before considering casting it aside.

It's from late 2009, 21.5inch. 3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo. 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Running Yosemite 10.10.5.

The problem is is that it regularly freezes (spinning wheel). This occurs almost without fail at the user select/login screen. Lasts for 3-5 minutes, then happens again a couple of times after logging in... generally over the next 10-15 minutes, then tends to settle down to do it semi-regularly.

I've tried basic stuff like running Disk Utility to verify the disk, repair permissions, etc. I used to have this issue when running Chrome and switching from that to Firefox seemed to resolve it for a while, until the last month or so. Mostly I run Logic Pro X (10.0.6), Firefox (44.02) and iTunes (12.3.2.35), though the issues start without me opening those. I've cleared Login Items under Users & Groups.

Any advice greatly appreciated!!
