Q: Kernel Task is using CPU and slowing down MacBook massivly

Hey,

updated to Mavericks but sadly my MacBook is running very slow now. I checked the Activity Monitor and my CPU is fully or sometimes almost fully used the kernel_task process...

Now I looked around and found that many have the problem but not many have a fix to it!

What can I do to get my MacBook to at least normal speed (its way slower then before and I was told Mavericks will make the Computer faster and more Battery Efficient).

Please let me know how I can constantly fix it...

Thanks

Mac OS X (10.6.8)

    jesalton,

    Please,

Start your own thread, by going to the Mavericks page, and typing your title question in the box "Search or ask a question."

By piggy-backing on an old, confused, "me too" thread, you are guaranteeing minimum (rather than maximum) help from fellow users here.

You can also copy and paste the whole etrecheck report in your thread for convenience. And, please give us all the info you can about your symptoms!

    Hello Arthur,

I realize this is an old thread, but I wonder if I might solicit your advice. I am getting error messages about my startup disk being full and when I looked into it, I saw that kernel task is taking up a lot of memory. When I try to search around on the boards (I admit I have very little computer knowledge) solutions seem to be to install the very things you call "crapware". My instincts are to agree with you, so I wonder if you would be willing to read my Entre Check report and provide some suggestions. Financially I am not in the position to purchase any additional memory, so if I could free up some available memory perhaps by uninstalling useless things, that would be a great help to me.

    Thanks for your support.

This thread is both old and rather long which means it will be difficult to untangle what reply it talking about what.  It might be better to create a new post.  In your post describe your problem and post the output from EtreCheck which will help in analyzing your situation

    <https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6174>

With respect to kernel_task size, it is a function of the amount of RAM installed in your system.  a few hundred MB if you have 4GB, around half a gigabyte if you have 8GB, and somewhere just under a gigabyte if you have 16GB of ram.  Your mileage will vary.

If you have 3rd party kernel extensions installed, your kernel_task usage can go up.  If it is much larger than the above suggested range for the amount of RAM installed, then chances are one of the 3rd party kernel extensions is responsible.

The EtreCheck output you post in your new thread will help identify those 3rd party kernel extensions, if any.

And yes, you should not install Anti-virus, Mac cleaners, memory cleaners, as they just aggravate the problems.

    Hi davidnajeradj,

Why does removing the plist file work and are there any risks involved in removing it? Will it recreate itself for example?

Would be intersted to know. Cheers

I would suggest letting your system run for awhile and then run EtreCheck when it is actually having problems.

I also suggest running Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor in the background and looking at it when the system starts acting up.

And run Applications -> Utilities -> Console looking for log entries that happen very frequently, such as a process starting, dying, starting, dying, starting....  as this kind of activity can consume a lot of system resources, but not show up in other places.

Again Please start a new thread with this information

Chances are Google Chrome is being a pig and consuming all your RAM.  Either keep a lot fewer Chrome tabs open or use a web browser that is not so greedy.

Once you start to use swap, your system performance is going to degrade.  Less so with an SSD, but it will still be slower.

    ,

Since you have a Macbook Air and cannot upgrade your RAM, maybe you should try the Vivaldi browser

    <>

It is very new, but its claim to fame is low memory usage.

I only "Just" heard about hit this week, and I do not know how good it is at what it does.  If you are interested, you should most likely do some Google search for "Vivaldi Browser" and see what the reviews are saying, and if there is anyone complaining about any security issues with Vivaldi.

Again, I really do not know much about Vivaldi, as it is very new.

Then again, I just duplicated my normal Firefox open tabs in Vivaldi, and Vivaldi used more Memory.  So your mileage may vary.

Perhaps Vivaldi is better at RAM usage than Chrome.

I guess you will need to either reduce you open tab count, or experiment with different browsers to see which ones do not over stress your 4GB of Macbook Air RAM.

        System Integrity Protection status: disabled

Not a good idea.  But it is your system, so have fun.

    Gatekeeper:

        Anywhere

Again, not a good idea.  Suggest changing this to Apple and Signed Developers in System Preferences -> Security.  You can always Control-Click on an app that is not signed and select Open, then you will be able to approve the app at that time, and it will remain approved going forward.

So here is where most of your Kernel memory is going.  What can you get rid of?  If nothing, then your kernel_task memory usage is going to most likely remain the same.

        [not loaded]    com.maintain.PurgeInactiveMemory.plist (2016-04-02) [Support]

This is a bad idea in El Capitan.  You are doing several things.

    • You are fighting El Capitan's memory management.
    • You are increasing writes to your SSD.  SSDs have a limited number of writes in them, before the start to fail.  You are shortening the life of your SSD by forcing data that was happy being cached in RAM out to disk sooner than it needs to be.
    • You are eliminating your disk cache, so you now have to wait while data that is need is read from storage.
    • The extra reads and writes to the SSD consume more power, so you are shortening the life of your battery.
    • Consuming more power generates more heat, so now the fans run more often, which draw power, which helps shorten the life of the battery.

             5%    BitTorrent

You have 2 Bit Torrent apps running.  This can affect network bandwidth and disk bandwidth.

        311 MB    Google Drive

    Google Drive Application  (/Applications/Google Drive.app)

        [running]    com.google.GoogleDrive.105632

Google Drive has been known to increase system load.  This may or many not be happening on your system, but I figured I would just pass along the information.  If you are noticing excessive network activity or I/O load or CPU load from Google Drive you may want to re-evaluate your usage of the service.

I want to generally make the computer quicker and working optimal.

Finally, you have a lot of Launch Agents, Launch Daemon, and Other Apps running in the background.  The more of them you can remove, the better your Mac's performance will be.  You have a good Mac with lots of RAM and an SSD, but you are also asking it to do a lot of things, so while you expect fast response from the GUI, you are dividing the Macs time between your interactive needs and all the background things you have asked your Mac to do.
