Q: iCloud Backup Broken After iOS 9 Upgrade

iCloud Backup on both my iPhone and iPad have been working fine for years until I upgraded to iOS 9.  After the upgrade it said my latest backup was "Never".  When I pressed "Backup Now" the progress bar flashed quickly then went back to saying my latest backup was "Never" (no error messages).

I decided to try turning iCloud Backup off and back on again.   When I try to turn in on it says "iCloud Backup Failed.  There was a problem enabling iCloud Backup.".

Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix?

iPhone 6, iOS 9

Right - iCloud backups do not happen when you hook up to iTunes - they happen over Wif when the device is plugged into a power source and locked.

The option in iTunes is just showing you that you have Automatic iCloud backups selected on the device. It doesn't do an iCloud backup via iTunes.

Interestingly enough, I am currently on vacation out of the country and so I wasn't messing with iCloud backup. However, I went to look and it automatically backed itself up yesterday and the day before. However, I just went to try an iTunes backup and I got the iPhone disconnected error. A reset of the phone fixed that, but I can't trust the backups currently. Backups are so messed up right now, it's not even funny. I don't want to wipe my phone and try a restore to see if that works because of the fact that backups are simply not trustworthy currently. Anyone else have their iCloud backup randomly start working?

Had one take randomly after I went to sleep two days ago. Still no luck on the iTunes back up. Someone on another thread hardlined that we should all call Apple and that it was the only way he was able to get his working again. While I don't doubt that might help for some, that was step 1 for me and here we are.

Well, I spoke too soon. I have not had a backup work since 2/9 and I can't manually backup to iCloud. It keeps failing again. I'm back in town now where my gigabit connection is so I might go ahead and bite the bullet and try wiping the phone. Anyone else with updates?

I have been in the same boat. I have multiple ios devices, but only 1 had never been able to back up to icloud successfully in any way. I just upgraded from 4s to 6s, but since I can't do a backup on old one I can't restore from it. It's funny that the new one can easy backup to icloud using the same account. It's like the 4s has something corrupt.

After 14 weeks, it finally worked. I opened itunes and turned OFF the auto sync. Plugged my iphone 4s in and only used the manual backup function then immediately restored from that backup. The only result is that settings, texts, etc are overwritten with a new set of data. Everything was there and apps untouched. I didn't sync, just manual backup to computer and immediate restore. Ran icloud backup from phone, and boom. Can't believe it.

Just an observation. On nights when I go to sleep with Do Not Disturb on, never seems to trigger an auto back up. Last night, I intentionally left it off. It backed up about an hour after I went to sleep.

In order for an automatic iCloud backup to begin, there are 3 requirements... on wifi, on a/c, locked.

I'll guess do not disturb is not locked.

Except for the part where this has been my routine since the inception of the iCloud and I never, ever had a single blasted issue with it until iOS 9 like virtually everyone else on this thread. Do Not Disturb very much qualifies as locked.

Apple needs to fix this! We shouldn't have to delete stuff and Try all these tricks!

Same problem for me. Since ios9 (and now 9.2.1), impossible to backup to icloud. "Last backup could not be completed". Even after several consecutive tries.

With ios7 and 8, it worked perfectly.

It seems than this issue has been resolved for some users and not for others ? Right ?

Have you deleted all of your existing iCloud backups? When you go to Settings>iCloud>Storage>Manage Storage and click on your device, what does it say you next backup size should be? Is it more than the amount of storage you have available to make a backup? (for example, my next backup for my iPhone 5s is 6.8GB. If I was only using the 5GB free storage, it wouldn't be able to back up.

Do you have any other devices backing up to iCloud?

    Cheers,

iCloud backup is still beyond broken. I have done everything short of completely wiping out my whole iCloud. I deleted all data from my iCloud except for backups of other devices and my iCloud Photos. I then completely wiped my phone using the option+click method and tried backing up after the phone was completely wiped out. Guess what? It still failed. I tried again and it actually completed. However, I went to try it again about 30 minutes later and it will not back up again. It started and said about 1 minute remaining since there wasn't really any data it needed to back up, but it sat at that point for about 4-5 minutes. It then moved to halfway, but the remaining time jumped from about 1 minute to 5 minutes then went up to 8 minutes. It sat there for a while again and then the bar again progressed almost all the way, but when it got to that point, it changed to "Estimating time remaining..." and didn't move. It then eventually failed again.

I have 200GB of iCloud space so storage obviously isn't an issue. I have a synchronous gigabit internet connection so speed obviously isn't an issue. This is 100% a problem on the Apple server side.

Yes I have deleted existing iCloud backups of my iphone 5s. The next backup should be 470Mo, I have an iPad on the same account (running iOS 7 and working perfectly on icloud) which takes 450Mo of storage. So I have 4Go available on my icloud... When I launch icloud backup on my iphone 5s, it stops after a few minutes with the message "the last backup could not be completed". Since iOS 9....

I don't know what to do...
