Q: How can I buy from the iTunes store using my my iTunes money from giftcards instead of my Family organizer's credit card?

I am in a family sharing system. I have 40$ itunes credit from itunes giftcards. I want to buy an album. I try to buy it - it says "Your Family Organizer, ~~~, must enter the security code for their payment method. I want to pay for this with my giftcard money, and it won't let me switch payment methods.

    Have you added the gift card to your account yet? Store credit is normally used first before any attached payment method, except in cases where a credit card must be used, e.g. software purchases in Canada. You don't need to remove the credit card first, and if I recall correctly you the family organizer must keep an active payment method on file with a family account.

    If you are underage, and your Organizer has "Ask to Buy" turned on, it appears that it will not deduct the purchase from your iTunes Credit. I can't test this since I have no minors in the house, but I have read several posts reporting this behavior. You could ask the Organizer to temporarily turn off Ask to Buy so you can make the purchase.

     

    According to the support article, they should be able to turn it back on with no issues if you are under the age of 18.

    Just to add to the obscurity of it all:

     

    This section of the Family Sharing Ask to Buy support article may provide some insight into what has previously been reported (emphases mine):

     

    Approve or decline a request

    If you're the organizer, you can use these steps to make or decline the purchase from your iOS device or Mac:

    1. Open the notification to see the item that your family member wants to get. (See your notifications on your Mac or iOS device.)
    2. Approve or decline the purchase.
    3. If you approve, you need to sign in with your Apple ID and password to make the purchase.

    After it's purchased, the item is added to the family member’s account and shared with the rest of the family group. If a family member downloads a previous purchase again, downloads a shared purchase, installs an update, or uses a redemption code in the store, the organizer won't get a notification.

    If you decline the request or don't make the purchase, it will be deleted after 24 hours, and the child will need to make the request again.


    However the sentence:

    Seems to contradict the first part. So, again, sorry I can't test it, but the reports have been that the Ask to Buy feature bypasses the credit.....
