Aug 24, 2006 2:24 PM in response to Kim Mcdanielby tomas472,The 'support' page for the most recent battery recall is rejecting one of my batteries, also.
It accepts my iBook as in-range, and accepts one of my iBook batteries (3K520*), but claims the other (ZZ427*) is either not a correct S/N or is not in range.
The CPSC and Apple sites bot list both batteries as being in range.
Calling Apple's support number gets a recording apologizing for not being able to help me at this time due to technical difficulties, and suggests I try the site again - later.
Puts me at a real quandary for my upcoming trip.

Aug 24, 2006 2:25 PM in response to tomas472by THS06ASU10,Its doing the same thing to me. Well, almost.
Its rejecting my serial # on the laptop, and also on the battery. I have a feeling its rejecting my laptop serial because its a refurbished laptop, but my battery serial is really close to yours. It's a 3k5121, and its rejecting that as well. -
Aug 24, 2006 2:30 PM in response to Yo Shu Laby THS06ASU10,I think they may have updated it. Mine kept rejecting both the serials, and now its accepting both. -
Aug 24, 2006 2:32 PM in response to tomas472by tomas472,Hmmmmmmm...
NOW I get a NEW recording at the supposed support number saying that as of 01AUG, phone support has been discontinued, and only 'chat' contact is available - go to service.apple - etc. for further information, BEEP - BEEP - BEEP - BEEP - etc.

Same thing with me keeps rejecting the battery. -
Aug 24, 2006 3:50 PM in response to tomas472by bearda,Same deal here. I can't find mention of this "chat" support anywhere on the website, though. After hitting 0 a few times at the first prompt it started forwarded me to the service department, but then I got an error message and it hung up on me. -
Aug 24, 2006 4:15 PM in response to Strimkindby THS06ASU10,This page seems to be more helpful (It also has a more extensive listing of batteries being recalled):
https://support.apple.com/ibook_powerbook/batteryexchange/
Before I was going through this page:

Aug 24, 2006 4:34 PM in response to Kim Mcdanielby thehighrise,I'm having the same problem with completing the form (A1061 battery, serial no begins with ZZ351) - hopefully they'll update overnight... -
Aug 24, 2006 4:40 PM in response to cajuncanuck125by Ben Kreeger,It seems like the range listed on the US Consumer Product Safety Commission's website is different; and my battery doesn't fall in that range! So is it wrong on Apple's website? I hope they fix it.

Aug 24, 2006 5:02 PM in response to THS06ASU10by blue minneapolis,The new page still isn't helping me. I've sat on hold with Apple Customer Support for a total of 3 or 4 hours today on several different calls. They all keep telling me to "keep trying the form" and that some people are having luck with that.
Apparently I'm not "some people", because even though my computer serial is valid, the site says my battery serial is not. (My battery serial starts with ZZ405, so its within the published range and the two Support Reps that I actually got to speak with say its covered under the program and I need to order a replacement.)
This is disappointing, as Apple usually provides a higher standard of care for its customers. (Though the second support reps did ask whether or not I'd been injured by the battery. That was nice of him. When I told him no, he promptly referred me to the less-than-functional battery exchange website, just like the first guy.) -
Aug 24, 2006 5:31 PM in response to blue minneapolisby hiddenmuse,So is the danger of fire present only when the computer is on and the battery is hot? I don't want to risk leaving my iBook and PowerBooks at home and coming home to a burned rubble. -
Aug 24, 2006 5:33 PM in response to Strimkindby k8lyn4121,Ya... so I have a 12 inch iBook G4 & my battery is consistent with what needs to be recalled except that my serial # is only 2 #s off what is being recalled. Mine is 3K621 & the recall is 3K611
Is this too close that I should be concerned? -
Aug 24, 2006 5:46 PM in response to k8lyn4121by trieste,It's like the lottery - no prize(?) if you are 1 or 100 numbers off.
So, no need to be concerned. -
Aug 24, 2006 6:04 PM in response to Strimkindby Krientle,Any guesses on how many times it will take Apple to get their batteries right? This will be my second replacement battery, and while I'm sure they have plenty of cash off of iPod sales, free batteries can't be helping their bottom line.
Oh well.

Aug 24, 2006 6:08 PM in response to Strimkindby Buzz Bee,Did any of you participate in the previous recall?
I did the previous recall a few months ago, using hteir battery recall page, and it went fine. Looking at the battery that they sent me, it falls in that range, but it flags my battery sn as invalid.
