Q: Messages doesn't store chats with bonjour anymore

After the last El Capitan update, the Messages app stopped to work in our local network.

At the moment you can see accounts when starting the app (The computers are visible in the shared section in Finder, too) like here:

Bildschirmfoto 2016-02-15 um 17.37.28.png

If we add "Freelancer" to a chat it is working, but there are no banners on new messages, even they are activated in System preferences. And the Avatar is not displayed.

After you close Messages (and storing of chats is activated in it's preferencesy) and restart the app, the conversation and the account are gone.

If i double click the "Freelancer" in the friends section, i get a Freelancer chat back to the "Chatroom" and it has the same address like as we started, but the conversation is gone.

The avatar is displayed, now, but when we restart the messages app again, the account is gone again.

This wired behavior is on several (all) computers (El Capitan 10.11.3), now, in the local network.

Is there any idea how we can bring back the Messages App just working?....

Best

    Hi Ralph,

i think you don't remember, but i had this problem with Mountain Lion already and you tried to help me these days, too to fix it.

    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5163409?start=0&tstart=0

The very wired thing is, that it ran now for 2 years and now the same issue is back again with a completely new OS... there must be a problem, but where?... We have not changed our network or whatever. Nothing but computer-names and Apple OS Software. So the most obvious conclusion would be: It's a problem of the OS. If it's not, what can it be?

Thanks for all of your help so far anyway!

    Best

    Hi,

Lets go back to this Picture and the path you list.

It is not where my Archive folder  is.

    Mine is in ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Messages.

See Path Bar across the bottom.

    Screen Shot 2016-02-17 at 20.16.50.png

The ~/Library/Messages contains the Attachments folder (with an alias pointing to it in the first location)

    Screen Shot 2016-02-17 at 20.18.20.png

In iChat the saved Chats folder could be moved around and the app did not seem to mind.

However it's normal location was ~/Documents/iChats.

    ichats.png

Do you know how your Archive folder ended up being in this Location ?

I have made no changes to my set up since Messages came out although the Archive folder has moved around a bit since Messages 7

Do you have a Alias in ~/Library/Containers .... pointing to the current location ?

Most or the "resets" I know involve losing some info as it involves deleting the chat.db items.

    Hi Ralph,

i do not know why my Archive folder is placed in the ~/Library/Messages Folder but there is an Alias of it in the ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.iChat/Data/Library/Messages

I never touched these folders (at least not at the 5 different machines..)

    Hi,

If there is an Alias then that would explain how the .ichat files are getting to that location.

I have a copy of OS X 10.8.5 which has a version of Messages at version 7.0.1

I will boot into that and check the locations.

    Hi,

At Messages 7.x.x he Archive and Attachments folder are both with the Chat.db itemsScreen Shot 2016-02-17 at 9.02.48 PM.png

There is no ~/Library/Containers item for com.apple.iChat

That would seem to leave which version you Upgraded from and whether Messages does it the same way if you jump from Mavericks to El Capitan for instance.

I have Updated each version of the OS  and have Upgraded each from Lion though to EL Capitan on this computer in a Step by Step incremental way.
Have you done it the sane way ?

Actually it was a clean, fresh installation of 10.11.1 with Upgrades to 11.2 and 11.3...

    Humm,

    Interesting.

Whilst The location I see is one I have been posting about for ages and people have no said anything it has always seemed an odd place for a collection of things that belong to the Mac User Account.

As the ~/Library folders is hidden in the first place burying it so deep has always been a bit of a mystery.

Your location is somewhat better.  It makes it clearer about the link between the chat.db items and the Archived items themselves.

Mine is not a fresh install.

I am a tiny bit surprised that a Fresh install does things differently  but not that surprised really.

It still isn't suggesting anything new for me to suggest though.
