Q: If I uninstall iTunes will I lose my playlists?

I have to uninstall and reinstall iTunes, as it seems this is the only solution to get my computer to recognise my new iPad 2. The only thing that concerns me (I'm not worried about losing my music) is that I'll lose my iTunes playlists. Are they stored somewhere the uninstall/reinstall doesn't effect? If I am definitely going to lose them in this process, I know you can export and then re-import the playlists, but that's such a tedious thing to have to do...

No. They should not be affected.

My question is similar and I hope not absurd, but I'm faced with having to uninstall/reinstall for a nano issue.  I'm most concerned about the genre.  i spent DAYS getting THOUSANDS of songs updated.  Will genre be affected or is it stored somewhere, such as the playlists in the original post here?

You should ultimately back up your iTunes folder, so that you are not affected by data corruptions or hard drive failure or other problem on your computer.  This is how you can do it, if you want to back up only your iTunes data instead of ALL of your computer's data.

Manage and back up your iTunes media library - Apple Support

However, when you re-install iTunes, you are affecting the iTunes application files, not your iTunes data.

What is your actual problem, the one with your iPod nano?

    kenechi,

Thanks sooooo much for the speedy reply.  i have about a 3month old nano that itunes knows is there, but continued to advise me to uninstall/reinstall as a first step prior to taking the nano in for service.

long story short: i went ahead and un/reinstalled and all my genres were still there thank god.   and, the ipod was recognized and is working harmoniously with itunes.

my file system was set up long before i had itunes and not everything was in the same folders, thus my extreme nervous condition over possible lost work.  but, all is well.

thanks for being there for a nerd-wanna-be in need!!

    cheers
