Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

There could be any number of reasons for the SBBOD™.  You could have a lot of junk on your hard drive that sapping all your RAM, thus making everything else slow to a crawl, the hard drive could be failing, you could have malware/adware on it, you could have a lot of programs or processes set to start when you log in.....we won't know until we can look at what's on your system right now.

Go to http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck — download and run EtreCheck, copying the status report to paste here.

    Joe-

My computer consultant had upgraded my Sophos antivirus software to the latest version which apparently causes issues with El Capitan.

I ran the Etresoft Etrecheck and it showed several Sophos items running.

I have completely removed the Sophos with their removal tool and will see if this solves the problem. I also run the Malwarebytes recommended by Apple

and it says I have no issues.

    Thank you for responding!

Good to hear!  As a side note, don't put Sophos back on your computer — Macs don't need anti-virus protection at this time.  They're well-meaning, but basically useless right now.

    Pinkstones,

Thanks for the response! I ran the Etrecheck and It showed the Sophos even though I thought I had removed it.

I used their removal tool and hope this solves the issue.

    THANK YOU!!!

The response is very strange.  I get a spinning ball almost every time that I click the mouse.  This didn't happen before I upgraded to El Capitan.  El Capitan is the problem, not anything else.

It's useless to add a "doesn't work" reply to someone else's topic, especially one that has already been solved by the suggestions given. Please start a new one.

When you start a new topic, try running this program and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor.  Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.
