Feb 19, 2016 1:29 AM in response to geoffreyfromnorthwichby Kappy,★HelpfulYou need to erase the disk and install the version of OS X that came pre-installed. You cannot pass El Capitan on to the next owner unless you are willing to also provide your Apple ID and password.
Be sure you de-authorize your computer in iTunes:
Deauthorization
You can de-authorize individual computers, but only by using those computers. The only other option is to "de-authorize all" from your iTunes account.
1. Open iTunes on a computer
2. From the Store menu, select "View my Account..."
3. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
4. Under "Computer Authorizations" select "De-authorize All".
5. Authorize each computer you still have, as you may require.
You may only do this once per year.
After you "de-authorize all" your authorized computers, re-authorize each one as required.
If you have de-authorized all computers and need to do it again, but your year has not elapsed, then contact: Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us.
For more information on authorization and de-authorization: iTunes Store- Authorize or deauthorize your Mac or PC.

When you reach Step 5 of the above, you will need your Snow Leopard or earlier installer disc that came with the computer when it was new.
- Follow these steps for installing the original version of OS that came with the computer.
1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After Disk Utility loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and
drive size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled), then click on the Apply button.
3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
4. If you are planning to sell or give your computer away, then do the following:
After you reformat your hard drive and reinstall OS X, the computer restarts to a
Welcome screen and asks you to choose a country or region. If you want to leave
the Mac in an out-of-box state, don't continue with the setup of your system. Instead,
press Command-Q to shut down the Mac. When the new owner turns on the Mac,
the Setup Assistant will guide them through the setup process.

Feb 19, 2016 1:48 AM in response to Kappyby geoffreyfromnorthwich,Thanks, the problem is I neglected to de-authorize my computer in iTunes, but have already gone through the process of doing a factory reset, along with the reinstallation of El Capitan. So I guess I will have to go back in and sign in using my Apple ID to deauthorize my iTunes, but that then means that my Apple ID is once again on the computer, which kind of defeats the object.
Also, to come back to part of my original question, having performed the factory reset in preparation for selling it, is everything now completely wiped?

Feb 19, 2016 1:46 PM in response to geoffreyfromnorthwichby dwb,★HelpfulKappy has answered your question.
There are two ways to de-authorize iTunes on a computer. Using iTunes on that computer or by logging onto iTunes from another computer and de-authorizing all your computers at once. This second method can be done only once a year.
He and I both suspect that your computer didn’t ship with El Capitan installed since few people sell a computer that is less than 6 months old. If your computer did not ship with El Capitan, you must erase the drive and install the original OS. Given that fact, go ahead and restart it with El Capitan and de-authorise iTunes first. Then follow his instructions to download and install the original OS.

Feb 19, 2016 1:59 PM in response to dwbby geoffreyfromnorthwich,My Mac didn't ship with El Capitan installed, you are correct. It shipped with Yosemite, and I downloaded the new operating system a couple of months ago.
In view of the fact I was selling my mac I cleaned the drive with a factory reset, then reinstalled El Capitan. What I failed to do was to de-authorize my iTunes account prior to this action.
Not to worry, my macbook has now gone to its new owner, so there's little I can do about it all now. I never had my credit card details set up on iTunes, and I'd only downloaded a couple of apps, which may now have been removed anyway with the drive wipe I performed.
