Q: Problem updating operating system

I have been trying to update to El Capitan and the down load completes and then I get the message that the disc is used for Time Machine back ups, so the update just sits there in limbo.

How can I remove time machine back up. I actually use a independent back up systemm

Navigate to the Applications folder, locate the El Capitan Install and double click it, this will being the El Capitan installation.

If this does not work then what you have likely told your system is that you want El Capitan installed on the Time Machine EHD. That is why you would get that error.
