Sep 25, 2013 9:41 AM in response to fieldsnycby Jotap62,I'm having some screen problems with a 2013 rMBP 13" when it wakes up, after going to sleep with the screen opened, showing visual glitches and artifacts "flashing" on the screen.
I discovered that if I close the screen and open it again, the problem disapears "like magic".
Realy strange…
It seems to be just a visual problem without corruption of any data because everything seems to be 100% ok.

Sep 25, 2013 3:52 PM in response to Jotap62by jasper9,If it helps anyone else, my problem that had the same symptoms was mcaffee endpoint encryption on the boot disk. Wiped the disk and reinstalled without encryption and it worked like a champ. Must have been corrupting the sleep image.

Sep 25, 2013 4:44 PM in response to jasper9by tillkrueger, well, call me crazy, but i maintain that in the end it will become clear that some of these rMBP's develop issues with the GPU, maybe due to the tight heat-tolerance in this first-generation case...i have gotten *bad* screen corruption that i would bet my life on are OpenGL/buffer-corruption artifacts, which have nothing to do with sleep mode (don't use sleep mode at all), or encryption (don't use it), or virus -scanners, or one of the other dozen shots in the dark Apple so often likes to present to us to gain more time to figure out the hardware problems.
In their defense, i did see a vast improvement in the severity of these artifacts and their frequency of occurrance after their last firmware upgrade that i was asked to wait for when i went to the Genius Bar *twice* about it (took photos of the corrupted screens and all)...and yes, it did get better, but i must say that it irks me extremely when i think about the fact that Apple expects their users to endure these ongoing issues while they figure out what went wrong, while making everyone go through a laundry list of unnecessary procedures, such as re-installing the OS (which i was asked to do 4 times, and losing a *lot* of time in the process i could have done *real* work during), removing half of the installed software and startup items, and otherwise sending us on goose-chases, only to hide the fact that they are already aware of hardware issues (because why would they otherwise ask me to wait for the firmware fix).
sorry for the rant, but this is only one of a series of hardware-related issues i've had with my Apple products this past year, and frankly, i am growing tired of the run-arounds and the apparent lack of quality control as of late...i am a professional, a pay professional prices for these higher-end products, and i expect professional and honest service in return.

Nov 11, 2013 2:03 AM in response to tillkruegerby mik01aj,I have the same problem with my 15" MacBook pro retina, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 2.3 GHz. I'm using OS X Mavericks. I have automatic graphics switching enabled. Closing the lid or logging in/out doesn't solve the problem, only switching to lower resolution does, but it's really annoying because I need the higher resolution.

Nov 11, 2013 2:52 AM in response to mik01ajby guguii,Go to a genius bar before warranty expires.
Temporali fix:
-restart as safe mode
-reboot
-disable safe sleep because the sleep image gets corrupted when mac goes to sleep in desicated gfx card.
Your mac never will go to "hibarnatio" BUT you will never get this glitch again(hope so!)

Jan 23, 2014 8:48 AM in response to kljohnsonby petewoolley,Hey, everyone else seems to have slightly different issues, but your screenshot looks exactly the same as mine! Did you ever find a fix? This is now the second late 2012 13" MBPr ive had with the same issue...

Mar 26, 2014 3:59 PM in response to fieldsnycby patk90,I went to the Apple Store 2 days ago and the "genius" told me he just recieved an email with a fix for it. He came out with a printed piece of paper with instructions on how to fix the problem. So far, I have not had any screen flickers on my late 2012 retina macbook pro 2.5GHz i5 with 8GB ram.
I kept the actual copy of the paper but took a picture of it for you guys to see.
Be sure to follow the steps! Really easy to do!
He said constantly restoring your mac to a fresh OS will not solve the problem unfortunately, since Apple have not yet patched the issue. I had this problem ever since updating to Mavericks (dont think ever before then). So, of course it must be a Mavericks bug!
HOPE THIS HELPS! (be sure to always back up your mac before doing anything)

Apr 9, 2014 3:39 AM in response to patk90by dlhopes,I'm guessing you should use the mac a bit and restart a few times before finally emptying the trash and deleting the files that were moved to the desktop then

Jun 17, 2014 6:53 AM in response to fieldsnycby smazon09,Hi,
I think this can be solved by going to
System preferences > Energy Saver > Unselect the automatic graphics switching.
Hopefully, this will resolve the issue.

Nov 26, 2014 6:50 AM in response to smazon09by kostia78,My rMBP has those glitches just for a few seconds after I open the lid but then they disappear. This issue first appeared in Mavericks but never before (Lion or Mountain Lion).
I followed smazon09's advice and I turned off the automatic graphics switching. That solved my issue but what will happen next? I now installed Yosemite and when I use the discrete graphics card the phenomenon reappears. Do you think I have to take it for a check up? Does anyone knows if there is some replacement policy or any official guideline for the issue?

Jul 24, 2015 3:02 AM in response to fieldsnycby rolia_a,Does anyone have exactly the same visual glitches as I have?
I've been to authorised repair service twice, because I've read that It could lead to mother board replacement, because of graphical card breakdown.
They say that all tests and diagnostics shows that everything is fine. My warranty is out of date soon, so I don't won't my notebook to breakdown.
Could it be a matter of scaled mode in display settings?
Macbook Pro 15'' mid 2012
Thank you

Feb 8, 2016 2:25 AM in response to rolia_aby erewwrwe,Hi Rolia,
I have the exact same problems with my macbook retina from mid 2012.
I to get these grayscreen glitches after I open my laptop from sleep.
These glitches started maybe 2 months after my purchase in FEB 2013.
After Apple in 2015 finally recognized problems with videocards from their macbook retinas from 2012 I contacted Apple.
The first time I visited the Apple store in Amsterdam they ran their hardwarecheck software to test my videocard. Midway the test the screen froze and they took my macbook in for further research. When I picked up my macbook they told me they didn't find any further hardware issues during the test and they filed it as a software problem. They told me to wait for the next big update El Capitan where it should be fixed.
I told them I wasn't to sure it was a software problem as I've had the same glitch already in Mountain Lion and tried several clean installs to solve the glitch.
Anyhow, I trusted their expertise and patiently waited for El Capitan.
After installing El Capitan my macbook was glitch free for about a month, but after it got back hard.
I went back to the apple store hoping they offer me a fix that would permanently remove the glitch issue. They again tested my laptop, but ofcourse couldn't find anything in the hardware (ugh). Apple was not able to give me any proper explanation on what could cause the glitch, or how they could solve it. Better said they took zero responsibility for fixing the issue. I was told again it was a software problem.
I frustratedly left the apple store and tried a AGAIN a clean install to see whether it would solve the glitches (NOT).
And HEY what a surprise, a clean software install did NOT solve any of my 'software' issues, nor did any of the patches they promised.
More annoyed then ever I again went back to the apple store Amsterdam last week - refusing to be send away without a final solution from Apple. I got to speak to a manager who got the head of the technical department to help me. The tech guy explained to me he would start a chat with the tech department in the US to which European tech departments go to if they don't know how to solve a technical issue.
Ok, so now the super techies from Apple US would look at this glitch issue they would finally fix it... right??
Nope.
One day later I got a call from the head tech guy from Amsterdam that his colleagues in the states could not find any issues while running their hardware test software. YES YES I KNOW THAT APPLE'S HARDWARE TEST SOFTWARE ISN'T ABLE TO FIND ANY ISSUES. I KNOW!!!!!
All i'm asking Apple is to make the glitch go away...
Long story short,
Apple has yet to take any responsibility for this glitch problem and refuses to help me with a solution.
This glitch issue has cost me over 20 hours+ not to speak the 180 hours I've worked to buy this macbook.
Now I'm stuck with a MBR I'm not able to resell, because who in the world is going to buy a secondhand MBR that has a grey glitch screen when opening??!?!?!

Feb 21, 2016 12:44 PM in response to erewwrweby Donenzone,I have the same issue as you. Went to the Apple Store in The Hague. They immediately did a hardware repair, replacing the logic board. Unfortunately, this board failed after a week. Went back, got a new logic board, but again with the same issue. Haven't gotten around to it to visit again.
