I see that you are having difficulties with the earbuds and your iPod nano. You can take a look at the following article to troubleshoot the iPod and earbuds.
A couple of other things to try is to push harder when plugging it in, sometimes the plug takes more force than one would think. Also, you can try other headsets and/or earbuds to see if they fit properly.
