Q: Permanently stuck on "downloading"

I have a book stuck permanently on "downloading." I have power cycled my iPad, signed off and back onto iTunes, and removed and re-installed iBooks, all to no avail.

Thanks for any ideas on how to fix this...

I had this problem too. A book I'd recently purchased worked in iBooks on my Mac (El Capitan). In iTunes I had All Books selected for my iPad, and I could see that particular book downloading to my iPad. But on the iPad, it showed only as downloading. On my iPhone, the book was usable as normal.

Go back into the bookstore and search for the book you were trying to purchase.

Following this advice, I went to the iBooks Store from the iBooks app, found the book and noticed that it was listed as downloading. I stopped the download and the progress symbol (a circle with a square inside) changed to the familiar cloud and down-pointing arrow. (There was no Read button as in the Mac version.) I exited the store and returned to My Books, and the book was there and worked fine.

I have no idea how it thought it needed to download again.

I also had this problem with an app that mysteriously started downloading again. I went to the App Store app and stopped the download. Then an Open button appeared.

Here's what I think is going wrong:

I purchase something on my Mac. That initiates a download. But before I can complete the download and sync, the iPad detects the new purchase and initiates a download. In some circumstances, maybe this is how you'd want it to work, but for me that's doubling sometimes large downloads on slow DSL.

I think this represents a conflict of sorts between syncing with iTunes and syncing automatically.

I'm not sure how Apple should fix this, but I've turned off Automatic Downloads for Music, Apps, Books and Updates in Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Automatic Downloads.

Hey Folks, I had this problem and my solution was as follows; I switched countries on the iTunes store and then switched back to the original country. I was then able to click on purchase.  Then it told me iTunes told me I had already purchased the book but gave me the option to download and voila, I got the book!  Hope this helps!
