I keep getting a popup saying I have a virus but avg hasn't said I do so do I actually have a virus
It's a scam. There are no viruses currently in the wild that can do any damage to OS X. It's a browser hijacker, and it's common on the kinds of sites you should avoid. Force Quit Chrome ( --> Force Quit --> Google Chrome), then restart the browser in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift key. This prevents any previous tabs/windows from reopening.
You also need to completely uninstall AVG, because as I said, there are no viruses for OS X. It's a useless program that actually isn't protecting you. There are no programs you can download, either for free or for a fee, that can keep you from downloading something you shouldn't from somewhere you shouldn't. Malware/adware are what Mac users need to be vigilant against, and you can do that by avoiding the following kinds of sites:
- XXX sites
- torrent sites
- aggregate download sites (CNET, Softonic, Download (dot) com, MacUpdate, etc.)
- mp3 download sites (Mp3 Skull, mp3monkey, etc.)
- any site that says you can do or download something you know otherwise costs you money
