Q: Help me! Older videos are missing!

Hi!

I've got a big problem! I've just tried to see my old videos from Photos and it doesn't work!!! I can see the thumbnail, but when I try to open it just shows die comment that Photos can't finde the file.

New videos are working. And I'm sure, that the old videos were working few month ago. The clips are very important for us! So what can I do now?

Thanks for helping and sorry for my bad english!

Tell us about the history of this library

Have you ever cleaned up your disk deleting large files or run clean up software like MacKeeper or CleanMyMac (Hint - never use these - they are not needed and can created massive problems)?

    Hi LN!

    Thanks for your fast answer!

First I've used iPhoto for a long time. At this time I had a similar problem (about 3 years ago), but I was able to fix it. Unfortunately I don't know the solution anymore. I think it was something like "repair library", but I'm not sure.

Approximative 1 year  ago I was changing to "Photo" App. At this time I didn't checked my library at all after it, but I couldn't see problems.

Today I recognized that all Videos wich I imported from my old Digital8 Cam are empty. All others (predominantly iPhone videos) are still here and works good.

Indeed I was using CleanMyMac. I've deleted it soon after installing, but every time I get my mac started I see a popup window, that I have to run CleanMyMac. But I can't find parts of the app on my mac. So obviously I can't clean it at all.

    Tanks für your help!

Depending on your version here's how to remove CMM entirely:

How to Uninstall CleanMyMac Classic? - MacPaw

How To Uninstall CleanMyMac 2? Complete Removal of ...

How to Uninstall CleanMyMac 3. Knowledge Base - MacPaw

After following the developer's instructions you can check to see if you've removed all of the files by downloading and running the shareware Find Any File to search for any files with the application's name  and the developer's name in the file name.  For example for CleanMyMac you'd do two searches:

    1 - Name contains cleanmymac

    2 - Name contains macpaw

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

Don't ever use any "cleaning", "optimizing" or "speedup" apps on a Mac.  They do more harm than good.  Also do not install and use any antivirus software.  There are no known viruses for Macs and AV software just compromises the system and application performance.

Select a thumbnail of one of the missing videos and try to use the File ➙ Export ➙ Export Unmodified Original menu option.  What happens when you do?

    Hi Old Toad!

Your amazing! I did " File ➙ Export ➙ Export Unmodified Original" and now I can see the video in Finder!!! I'm so happy!

But I don't get it! How can that be? Is there a simple way to get this fixed, so that I can see the files directly in Photos App?

    Thanks for your support!

Try repairing your database - backup the Photos library and then hold down the option and command keys while launching Photos - repair the database and see if that resolves this

Try repairing the library as Larry suggested according to the instructions in this Apple document: Repair Your Library.

Warning: If you use iCloud Photo Library with Photos, this action will cause Photos to upload all your pictures again (from Fix missing or incorrect thumbnails in Photos - Apple Support).

I performed the repairing mode. But the problem is still the same. The videos are still existing, but I can't see them in Photos. Just by exporting and converting the video.

While exporting I saw that that Videos are .avi files. Does this matter for Photos?

I have .avi video files in my Photos library and they are compatible.   Do you get the same response if you re-import those .avi videos that you have exported?
