Mac OS XDoes it go all the way across the screen? Try doing a Reset (restart) on the iPod.

When you see the Apple logo, is the red line still there? If the Reset does not make it go away, you may have problem with the iPod's LCD. You can also try doing a Restore using iTunes; that erases the iPod, reinstalls its software, and sets it to default settings.
If the Restore does not help, it is more likely to be a hardware problem.
NOTE: If your iPod nano is less than one year from purchase data, it is covered by the standard warranty.

I tried both of your suggestions. The line is still visible when restarted. It is also there when restored. I think you are correct in saying a hardware problem. The device is over a year old so it is out of warranty. The device works as if it was new. The red line is only visible when I activate the screen so I'll just use it as is.
Thanks for your suggestions!
