Q: Is there a way to share files/folders across Macs?

I want to be able to share a folder across Macs (me and my wife's).  Is there a way to do that?  I tried Help and got nothing about sharing files/folders across Macs just how to share with Windows.

I opened Mac Help on my computer, typed in "Sharing" and found this:

    ----------------------

    File sharing

You can share files with other Mac computers:

    Over a network

    Using AirDrop

    Using Back to My Mac

    ------------------------------

Each category has a link to the appropriate instructions. Here's what the first link shows:

    --------------------------------------------------

Share your files with other Mac users

You can share files and folders with others on your network. You can share your entire Mac with everyone, or allow specific users access to only certain folders.

Open Sharing preferences if it isn’t already open (choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Sharing).

    Open Sharing preferences for me

    Select the File Sharing checkbox.

To select a specific folder to share, click the Add button  at the bottom of the Shared Folders list, locate the folder, select it, then click Add.

The Public folder of each user with an account on your Mac is shared automatically. To prevent a folder from being shared, select it in the Shared Folders list and click the Remove button .

By default, any user set up on your Mac in Users & Groups preferences can connect to your Mac over the network. A user with an administrator account can access your entire Mac.

To give only specific users access to a folder, select the folder in the Shared Folders list, then click the Add button  at the bottom of the Users list. Then do one of the following:

Select a user from Users & Groups, which includes all the users of your Mac.

Select a user from Network Users or Network Groups, which includes everyone on your network.

Select a person from your contacts. Create a password for the person, then click Create Account.

To specify the amount of access for a user, select the user in the Users list, click the triangles next to the user name, then choose one of the following:

Read & Write: The user can see and copy files to and from the folder.

Read Only: The user can view the contents of the folder but can’t copy files to it.

Write Only (Drop Box): The user can copy files to the folder but can’t view its contents.

No Access: The user can’t see or copy files from the folder.

OS X allows guests to access shared folders on your Mac. To turn off guest access, deselect “Allow guests to connect to shared folders” in the Guest Account pane of User & Groups preferences.

Wow, what a difference.  I typed in "Share folders" and got next to nothing.  I was in "Mac Help" from Finder.   Is there some "thinking" I should be using when I search help?  I have been frustrated more than once when searching help in more than one app.  I am not alone with this frustration either.  Thanks again for your insights.

It helps to know what Apple calls a particular function. If you look is the system prefs there's a selection named "Sharing", rather than "Share."

When I type "Shar" into Mac Help on my computer it gives me a list of useful choices, but "Share Folders" is less helpful. It's always best to search on the shortest terms possible and refine from there.

I have found that 90% (made-up number, but I bet it's close) of the questions asked here are unnecessary, since the answer is already in Mac Help. For that matter, rather than ask a question here try just typing it into a google search box. "Sharing Mac" takes me right to Apple's answer on how to do it.

I appreciate what you are saying.  And I have been told to do the "Google" thing by other Apple experts, from Apple.  When I was on Windows I seemed to be able to find everything I needed in the local app help.  I don't recall having to "Google" anything.  But I will take you advice and  try and adapt to Apple terms and use the shortest term possible for help search.

    Thanks again.

Actually, I always search Mac Help first before looking elsewhere.

The app would have been System Preferences, had you searched there you would have found Sharing by typing in Share.

Just a thought.....you may want to become more familiar with OS X, for most it's much more intuitive than Windows.
