Q: Select secondary monitor, triple monitor issues

Hello everyone.

I have a Mac Pro on 10.9.5 set up with two dual-DVI video adapters.

One of them is running a 27" Samsung panel (primary display with menu bar and stuff) and a 20" calibrated Cinema Display (to the right and a bit below than primary) I use for color proofing.

The other GPU has half the VRAM so it's running a 17" 4:3 Benq display I use for auxilary tasks.

However when I select "Show viewers on second monitor" in Final Cut Pro X, it's displaying the viewers on my small Benq, instead of my CD.

I have seen multiple solutions on the web involving setting one of the monitors as TV Out but it only seems to work with HDMI GPU's, since in my case the TV Out list in Preferences is empty.

What I would like to achieve is having viewers on my cinema display, the storyline on my main 27", and if possible, have the event browser on my auxilary 17".

Right now to display the viewers on my Cinema Display, I have to disconnect the Benq, go to System Preferences, click Detect Displays, go to FCPX, enable viewers on secondary display, reconnect the Benq, go to System Preferences and Detect again. That process is annoying and slow.

Anybody know a solution to this?

Big thanks in advance.

While FCP X does not explicitly allow you to choose which will be the first, second and third displays, you can get it to work the way you want.

This requires a little trip to System Preferences->Displays.

From your post, I get that you are have the menu bar on only one screen - since Mavericks, you can have menu bars in all your displays.

(This can be changed in System Preferences->Mission Control, by checking "Displays have separate Spaces", then log out and back in).

(The following will work regardless of your choice above)

Let us call your displays 1,2,3. Open Preferences->Displays and click on Arrangement.

    A) Drag the little menu bar from display number 1 to number 2. This may make FCP X move to display number 2. If that is the case, drag FCP X back to display number 1.

    B) Window->Show Viewers in Second Display

    Done.

Nope, I have separate spaces per display.

The method I described also works in this setting.

Yeah, but my menubar is already on the monitor 2.

Let me describe the steps in a little  more detail:

Have FCP X running with everything in one window, in the middle monitor.

In System Preferences->Displays, move the menu bar representation to the monitor on the right, where you want the viewers. If the main FCP X window moves there, just move it back to the monitor in the middle. Then do Window->Show Viewers on Second Display and they will appear where you want them.

Oh, still that process is a bit tedious.. isn't there a way just to layout the three panels on three displays like it was possible in FCP 9?

Tedious, maybe, but you just have to do it once! (the thing in System Preferences->Displays, I mean).

You probably meant FCP 7, since there was never an FCP 9... currently, this is it: you can put either the events or the viewers on a second display, and you can use a third as A/V output (on compatible models or with specific hardware; not your case).

You mean I can put back the menu bar afterwards?

You said you had set "Displays have separate Spaces", which means you have menu bars on all displays; hence what is set in the the display preferences loses relevance.

I just tried that and now the viewers appear on the central display instead of the right one, which is not what I need :/

You have to do it beginning with the whole thing in one window, in the center display...
