I understand that you are receiving an error when attempting to upgrade to El Capitan. Let's start with booting your MacBook Pro into safe mode and then attempting the update.
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn‘t finish starting up
Next, I would recommend going through the steps in the article below if the issue persists.
OS X: "Cannot connect" or "Cannot connect to the App Store. An internet connection is required"
