    Hi raylog5479,

The iBook G4 1.33 GHz came originally with Mac OS X 10.4.4 Tiger. Macs cannot run any OS older than what they came with, so Panther will now run. You will need a Tiger disc that is Mac OS X 10.4.4 or later (I believe the only retail releases later than that were 10.4.6 and 10.4.9; might be useful for searching for a disc to buy). If you have the Tiger restore discs that came with the iBook, use those. But Panther won't work. Sorry about that.

    Hope this helps,

According to specifications of model build iBook G4 12-inch (mid-2005)

the computer cannot use an OS X older than what it shipped with, new...

{On first viewing this discussion thread, there were no visible replies, only

    indications of an invisible one were. Until I added a reply none were visible}

Depending on exact build date, there would have been either one Tiger 10.4

custom version or another Tiger 10.4 version; shipped with the iBook on gray

label restore-install DVD media specific to the date/version. A retail Tiger 10.4

version would only be useful in a reinstall to the computer, IF it is newer than

10.4.5 and on a retail DVD. Any Tiger 10.4 retail or machine-specific discs are

now considered Rare and may cost on that basis... The other option is to get

and use an OS X 10.5 Leopard retail install DVD.

    Original OS    Mac OS X 10.4.2 (8D37)

    Later OS    Mac OS X 10.4.4 (8G32)

Maximum OS    Mac OS X 10.5.8

    Hardware Test    AHT (iBook) 2.5

None of those 'retail' install discs (except original install-restore grey label DVD)

would offer the original Apple applications that accompanied a new computer.

Those would be lost or not in an all-new installation from later OS X retail DVD.

iLife, iWorks, and other applications were available by purchase of second DVD

set with those applications. Some are still available from online vendors such as

you may find on amazon or ebay sales web sites. A retail OS X 10.5 DVD does

not include the equivalent of 'bundled software' like the computer had new.

    • iBook G4 (mid 2005) 12-inch and 14-inch info (from http://mactracker.ca database)

    Introduced    July 2005

    Discontinued    May 2006

    Model Identifier    PowerBook6,7

    Model Number    A1133 (12.1-inch) --  A1134 (14.1-inch)

    Order Number    M9846LL/A (12.1-inch) -- M9848LL/A (14.1-inch)

    Built-in Memory    512 MB

    Maximum Memory    1.5 GB

    Memory Slots    1 - PC-2700 DDR333 200-pin SO-DIMM

An older Panther 10.3.7 install disc, either retail version or older grey machine specific

DVD kit, won't work to install an OS X in the newer iBook G4 (mid 2005) build models.

    Good luck & happy computing!
