Epson and Canon printers are both good printers. You will want to find one that supports AirPrint so you can print from an iPhone and/or iPad.

I have an Epson XP-630 and it works great for basic printing needs via iDevices and Macs. Ink cartridges are reasonably priced too.

The pluses for me were:

• I can print from my iPhone and iPad directly
• Connects wirelessly to my AirPort network
• The toner cartridges are reasonably priced, there are third-party options, or I can refill them at home
• The cartridges last a long time (my wife likes to print coupons - lots), the current ones are almost a year old and I haven't filled them yet.
• Prints excellent color photos

The downsides were:

• Initial cost ($449 list, picked one up for just below $300 on Amazon)
• Lasers do not use the same color photo paper as inkjets
• More limited to paper thickness, I can't do 100# stock, most it will handle is 80#
