if your system qualifies for the OS upgrade (if it's a 2014 it does) there are two ways you could do this
- Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) [3,1]
Internet recovery, wipe the drive, install the default OS that came with your computer, then update to 10.11.3
Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery - Apple Support
or install 10.11.3 on bootable media, wipe the drive, proceed with the install
Create a bootable installer for OS X - Apple Support
either of these methods should not brick anything, I'm not sure what you read or where you read it.
