Q: What is the local storage space requirement for backing up a 6s?

Recently upgraded from 4s to 6s. Contents (from 4s backup) seems to works fine on the new 6s, although the first day pics and vids (taken with the 4s) wouldnt open at all on the 6s This issue however seems to have worked itself out and it pics and vids now function as they should.

But, to upgrade the 6s to the latest iOS I need to do a backup of the 6s (of the same contents as was in the 4s backup). All of a sudden, there is not enough space on my HD to to a backup (even though this was not a problem with the same content on the 4s). Any help most appreciated :-) would prefer not to start deleting or moving files, especially since I don't know how much space is required..

iPhone 6s, iOS 9.2, null

How much of the 6 space is used, and how much do you have available for the backup. If the first is bigger than the second it won't work.

    Thanks for a quick reply..

That was my first thought as well. However the content is the same as it was with the 4s.. which i reccon should have been a problem before as well..?

have a ssd with limited space of 125 gb and only 4-15 free at any given day. Contents of the phone around 35-40 gb

Or could I maybe remove the old 4s backup from my mac (how?) and then have equivalent space made available for the new backup..?

4 to 15GB, is unsafe for your Mac (as well as leaving insufficient space for phone backup)

Tend to that before your problems multiply.

The backup does not include music or apps, because they are already on your computer in iTunes or can be downloaded again if they were iTunes purchases. It includes app data. See: About backups in iCloud and iTunes - Apple Support

You can always back up to iCloud rather than your computer.

If you open iTunes Preferences and click on the Devices tab you can see all of the backups that are using space on your computer. There's probably more than one; you can delete any older ones right in that dialog. You can also delete the 4S backup, since you don't need it anymore, to free up space. The link above tells you where to find the backups, so you can see how much space deletions would free up.

    Thanks for the help :-)

Actually kinda figured it out, deleting the old backup seemed to free up enough space for doing a new one.
