Q: Messages icon on Mac next to doc

I don't have iMessage turned on my phone. Why is the message bubble showing up on my desktop next to the doc overtime I open messages on my iPhone?

I have iMessage disabled on my iPhone and this just started happening recently.

Every single time I get a message or open a new one to send the bubble shows up on the left of the doc. How can I get this to stop?

Thank you.

    Hi,

I am not sure I fully understand.

On the Mac there is a Bar with many App icons pinned to it called the Dock.

On the iPhone the app is called Messages  and it can be turned On to do iMessages and SMS.

The Mac version is also called Messages  and by Default the icon fro the app appears in the Dock.

I am not sure that you are not talking about a doc (ument) that is called "overtime".

I am also not sure why this causes you to then start Messages on the iPhone if you don't use it.

IF you have previously dragged the Messages icon off the Dock and are opening Messages from the Application folder the icon will still appear in the Dock as all open Apps do even if they are not in the Dock normally.  They will disappear when the app is closed (Quit)

    Hi,

I am not sure I fully understand.

On the Mac there is a Bar with many App icons pinned to it called the Dock.

The icon does not appear on the dock but directly next to it on the left.

On the iPhone the app is called Messages  and it can be turned On to do iMessages and SMS.

I have iMessages turned off on my phone.

The Mac version is also called Messages  and by Default the icon fro the app appears in the Dock.

I removed the Messages icon from my dock. The icon temporarily appears to the left of my dock on the Mac when I open messages on my phone to send a text.

I am not sure that you are not talking about a doc (ument) that is called "overtime".

I am also not sure why this causes you to then start Messages on the iPhone if you don't use it.

I don't use iMessage on my iPhone. I have it turned off. I use regular messages. As soon as I receive a text message on my phone, the Messages icon appears to the left of my dock. As soon as I read my text message on my phone and close the text message, the icon disappears from the screen of my Mac.

IF you have previously dragged the Messages icon off the Dock and are opening Messages from the Application folder the icon will still appear in the Dock as all open Apps do even if they are not in the Dock normally.  They will disappear when the app is closed (Quit)

    Hi,

    4thanx.gif    for the    2correct.png  Points.

That said you still don't appear to have solved the issue.

    Reading between the lines:-

On the iPhone the app is called Messages  and it can be turned On to do iMessages and SMS.

I have iMessages turned off on my phone.

So you have it set up to do just SMS/MMS Messaging.

The Mac version is also called Messages  and by Default the icon fro the app appears in the Dock.

I removed the Messages icon from my dock. The icon temporarily appears to the left of my dock on the Mac when I open messages on my phone to send a text.

    Plus:-

IF you have previously dragged the Messages icon off the Dock and are opening Messages from the Application folder the icon will still appear in the Dock as all open Apps do even if they are not in the Dock normally.  They will disappear when the app is closed (Quit)

So the Messages app on the Mac is NOT on the Dock but does appear when it is opened and goes when the app is Quit.

That all sounds fairly normal  so far.  That is until you add this bit:-

As soon as I receive a text message on my phone, the Messages icon appears to the left of my dock

It seems to me the only explanation left is  that you have a Mac and iPhone that can do Handoff and Continuity (My Mac cannot do this function).

The iPhone and Mac can be paired via Blue Tooth so that items taking place on one device can be completed on the other.

There is some info about turning it Off here OS X Yosemite: Pick up where you left off with Handoff

I had not considered this for two reasons.

    1) as I said I can't do it.

    2) it would normally think of setting it up as the last stage of linking iMessages and then SMS across the two devices:-

Enable the Mac with and Apple ID.

Enable the iPhone and wait until the number Verifies with the iMessages server.

Test iMessages from each to the other.

Add Apple ID to iPhone to link them ("Syncs" both devices to any iMessages sent to either ID)

Set up Text Forwarding (SMS forwarding) on the iPhone which triggers the Code number panel on the Mac version

Add the Code Number back to the iPhone.

    Set up Handoff/Continuity

Most of that is also based on the way the features have been added to the various versions since Mountain Lion and the first version of Messages.
