Q: Battery Recall

I just read an article about how more ibook batteries are being recalled:

http://www.prnewswire.com/news/index_mail.shtml?ACCT=104&STORY=/www/story/08-24- 2006/0004421452&EDATE=

Time for everyone to check their batteries again (I do not believe mine applies with HQ4527 =/...oh well). Its not on the apple website yet, but it should be soon.

I tried my battery 12 digits serial number starting with 6c545.. and surprisingly the website didn't recognize it. I phoned Apple and they told me to keep on trying, because only via the website would be the exchange of the battery free of charge. That wonderful information cost me 5 Euros and a number of nerve cells as I had to wait several minutes listening to awkward music without any hints on the average waiting time. At least they allowed me to file a complain

I also have the serial number rejection problem - battery model = A1061 serial number = 6C546. Like others above, the IBook serial number is accepted by the web form.

This is a shamble! Although my battery does not seem to be effected according to the list (my battery model no is A1080, Serial: LW5430) but I tried to submit it on the website and they responded that my Computer Serial is correct but the battery serial number is wrong and then asks me to try again.

Useless! Very frustrating and it has been a good 18 hours dince the recall.

slamminmarcus: Not sure why you are frustrated? Your battery is not in the range affected, not even the model number qualifies.

So "This serial number is invalid or does not qualify for the program." is correct for your battery'

My battery number, 5c521...., is in range but the site does report it as invalid. Frustrating.

Same problem here. Battery serial number starts 6C539 but web site is rejecting it. C'mon Apple get your act together!

Apple need to indicate whether battery serial numbers in the recalled range are being rejected by their website because their servers are overwhelmed or because they are in fact safe to use. I can easily see a scenario where Apple lead a customer to believe that their battery is safe to use, but it subsequently causes a burn or fire.

I participated in the last battery recall and I had this exact same problem. The form said my battery was invalid, even though it fell within the correct range. At the time I took the form for truth and figured the range was wrong. Oddly enough though, when I sent the iBook in for a new logic board (under the logic board replacement extension program), they replaced the battery too.

I was hoping this battery recall would work more smoothly, but alas, once again I am in the correct range and the form says the number is invalid.

You know, I've had Apple Computers for some time now, but in the last year it's gotten to be kind of a hassle. Three logic board replacements, and two battery recalls. As of right now, I've got an iBook G4 that falls under the battery recall, and an iMac G5 with a fan problem that I need to send in for repair. What a hassle!

And last night when I was using the chat support function to determine whetehr the iMac needed to be sent in or not, I got kind of a snotty chat support agent. That's never happened to me before. I've always got kind and courteous support staff whenever there's been a problem. Up until last night, I've always thought, well yes there are the occassional problems, but at least they've got great support. Not the case if I'm going to have to put up with attitude.

I used to really love to tease my father about how his PCs are always broken. Now I don't have a whole lot of room to laugh.

I've always been about more people using Apple machines, but if this (bad products, bad support) is what happens when a company grows and more people start using the product, then I'd be happy if Apple stays with it's 3% of the market user. I want my great computers and great support back!

Has someone thought about writing to one of the news channels that have reported this story, telling of the problems we are having trying to obtain a replacement battery. Maybe all of us should write!!! Maybe Apple will move faster on getting their page fixed.

My iBook serial # qualifies and so does my battery 6C544, but I've been getting the same message on the website, and busy signal from the support phone # as everyone else.

Same boat here ... according to Apple's site (and the other Consumer site mentioned in another post), the battery serial # range of 6c519-6c552 is covered under the recall.

The Apple battery exchange process accepts my iBook as eligible, but says my battery serial # (starting with 6c540) is invalid or does not qualify.

Yes, I read the number off of the battery properly.

Phone lines at Apple are busy.

    So, what now?????

I am finally having some success. As I posted earlier, I'm having the same issue... number falls within the range but the form rejects it, calling it invalid.

After attempts with Customer Support, I called Customer Relations to file a complaint. I am now being helped!!! Took an hour on the phone to get here, but at least they didn't cut me off when I said "Battery Replacement." They also seem to be a lot friendlier in Customer Relations. Haven't got the end result just yet, but she's researching the problem and agrees that my battery is indeed within the recall range! The end of the tunnel maybe?

This is not the first time Customer Relations has been more helpful than Customer Support! Makes me think I should start calling them first, but obviously that would be a bad idea.

So if you're having trouble with the form, and with Customer Service, you might try Customer Relations! It's working for me (I'm pretty sure).

"This serial number is invalid or does not qualify for the program." uh, yes Apple it is valid and yes Apple it does qualify based upon your battery range. fix the problem!

Calling the number after winding through their menu all I get is a fast busy.

Good luck to others who try, I've been trying repeatedly with no luck. Good thing I don't travel with my laptop or I'd be majorly p.o.'d.

to clarify I am editing the full serial number.

The full serial number is being rejected. I suspect that few, if any, of the people reporting problems are making the mistake of entering only part of the serial.

My included # is still being rejected this morning.

I had been using Firefox but just tried with Safari on the off chance that the browser affected the form. Same result.

Yep. Customer Relations helped me! They're sending the new battery. Took a little while on hold, but the agent was nice and the end result is a replacement battery.

Did you know it's going to take 4-6 weeks to get the new batteries? How am I supposed to function in the mean time?

"This serial number is invalid or does not qualify for the program." Surprise! it is valid and surprise! it does qualify based upon your battery range.

    Fix the problem!

All 12 charactors were entered correctly. Like I mentioned, either form is bad or there are some serials within that range that Apple deems good and not applicable for recall, but since they don't mention this anywhere, I think this is highly unlikely.
I'd call in 2 weeks, unless they post something to the effect that the form has been fixed.
