Q: I have a second generation ipod shuffle which has decided to stop working is it repairable?

Hi I have a 2nd Generation ipod shuffle which up until a month ago was working, now it wont charge, or play back. Should I give up and get a new one? Or send it somewhere to try to repair it?

You can make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple store to check, or you can contact Apple Support.  http://www.apple.com/support/ipodshuffle/contact/

If it won't charge, that's probably also why it won't play.  For the reason it won't charge, the problem could be a one of three things:

    - A faulty USB docking cable.  Are you using the original cable (with a cradle at iPod end) that came with your shuffle.  You can buy a replacement for it, but make sure it is described as being for the 2nd gen shuffle.  A replacement USB docking cable for the current 4th gen (and 3rd gen) shuffle does not work with 2nd gen shuffle, because the connector is different.  Here's an example of a third-party replacement cable for 2nd gen shuffle (I have no personal experience)

    - A problem on the USB port.  If your computer has more than one, try another USB port.  Shut down (power off) the computer, to reset the ports.  Put the shuffle's power switch in the OFF position.  If you have other USB devices connected at the same time, disconnect all other devices (except for standard keyboard/mouse if used).  Start up computer, run iTunes, and connect the shuffle by itself to a direct USB port.

    - A problem on the shuffle.  If you have ruled out the first two above, the most likely cause is a problem with the shuffle's headphones jack no longer connecting, because it is worn out.  Do you still see a light (any color) on the shuffle when you connect it?  If the problem is the battery, you often still see a light (maybe red) when you connect it.

The 2nd gen shuffle is quite old at this point, so if you take it to the Genius Bar of an Apple Store, make sure the technician is knowledgeable.  For example, if the tech tries to connect it using a USB docking cable that they use with 4th gen shuffles, it's not going to work.  Take your original USB docking cable with you to the session.  Hopefully, they'll have one available there that is known to be good, so that you can rule out your cable being faulty.

Since the current 4th gen shuffle is $50 retail, any repair is not worthwhile, unless you are technically inclined and enjoy taking apart tiny electronics yourself.
