Q: Restore from backup possible without upgrade?

So, there's the simple question to which I have not been able to find an unambiguous answer:

Can i restore my iPhone without having to upgrade it to the newest IOS?

It seems that when restoring the iphone tries/requests to update. I am not sure if you can cancel that.

I have an iphone 4S, it runs ios 7.1.2, it is not jailbreaked nor provider locked. I have made a manual backup to ICloud and Itunes and so can restore from either one.

(My main goal is to get rid of about 6Gb on 'other' files. For that I will erase all data and then restore from backup)

thanks

iPhone 4S, iOS 7.1.2

Erasing the phone via the settings and then restoring an iCloud backup will not cause an iOS update to occur. It will retain the iOS that is currently on the phone. That I am absolutely sure of. With iTunes, you should be able to cancel the update request and just restore the backup, but unfortunately I can not speak with the same certainty about that method.

Thanks for your answer. I might give it a try, although I'm still insecure seeing the information Apple gives:

There are several reasons that there might not be any available iCloud backups for your iOS device:

Insecure about having a backup period or the quality of the backup? There is no reason to belive that your backups are not good unless you had issues creating those backups, which you should have been warned about at the time you created them.

You can check for backups in iTunes by launching iTunes and going to Edit>Preferences>Devices. A window pops up with all of your iOS backups listed. You can check to see the date and time of your last iCloud backup in Settings>iCloud>Backup>On. The next screen will show you when you last backed up.

As for the question about restoring the backup without updating, I still stand by my first response. When you restore a. ICloud backup, that does not update the device. A device can not be upgraded via iCloud. It is the iTunes method that I'm not certain about.

It restored without doing an upgrade. So it all worked out. ' Other' files weren' t reduced as much as I hoped but still some GB.

    Thanks
