Q: rMBP 2014 randomly goes black screen or shutdown with no log

Hi everyone,

my 15" rMBP 2014 has this symptom for 2 weeks. I have check system log and got nothing, reset PRAM and SMC already, clean install the OS X 10.11 twice and it came anyway. it happens randomly when i'm using typical programs like Chrome Pages and some web editor. However, I played games that have graphic renders, it still work perfectly and has no black screen or shutdown for hours. But with typical programs, it takes me up to an hours and the screen goes black or shutdown. So I have to restart again, sometimes just log in to desktop for 2 minutes and then it turn me to black screen. Now I have to turn my graphic game on and do my work for not getting black screen.

Has anyone else seen this issue? I need guys to help me, what's wrong with my laptop. Because I have no apple care, so I need to know what's part I have to fix.

     Many thanks for help.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

    Hi there pineappleXL,

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

If I understand correctly, your MacBook Pro is shutting down unexpectedly when using some applications. It sounds like you've done quite a bit of troubleshooting too, but if you haven't already, take a look at the article below which provides a lot of great information and troubleshooting tips that can help resolve issues like the one that you've described.

    Ciao.

    Hi,

I have test from this article and run OS X in SAFE MODE for several hours. It had no any symptom. but when running on NORMAL MODE, it had the same symptom again. I still have no idea what's wrong with my laptop.

a few days ago, I used a Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter to my rMBP. It had no any sympton like boot in SAFE MODE.So I tested with Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter plugged for days, found it had no black screen all that day during Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter plugged. But when I took the adapter off, the symptom was happen again. Did it mean something?

    Thanks,

    pineapple

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Due to the nature of the unexpected shutdown issue, you may find more information by using another one of these Apple support resources - https://getsupport.apple.com/GetproductgroupList.action.

A few days ago, my rMBP was not boot to macOS and question mark folder appeared. Then I brought my laptop to AASP to diagnose it. The result was a broken flash storage, so I replaced it and it works perfectly since then. It has no black screen anymore.

these symptoms might happen from a bad functional flash storage. So it will randomly restart and goes black screen until it does not work.
