Q: Does Airport Express work with iPod Hifi?

I have iPod Hifi and i would like to buy Airport Express to make them wireless and play songs from Mac and iPhone. Would that work? What else do i need? Also would the extending wifi feature work fine too?

Thank you for your time.

The iPod Hi-Fi is not an AirPlay ready device. However it does have a 3.5 mm analog/digital input audio port that can be connected to an AirPort Express for playback of iTunes streams coming from either the Mac or iPhone.

Note: Both the Express and the iPod Hi-Fi have built in DACs to convert digital-to-analog audio sources.

As far as extending Wi-Fi, the wireless router to be extended with the Express would have to be another Apple product: Express, Extreme, or Time Capsule.

Lets see if i understood you correctly.

So if i was to connect the audio port (which i currently have been using with Aux cable) to the Airport Express i can play songs from my iPhone, mac and iPad. Which is good news. Is it a simple plug and configure system?

Apologies for my ignorance i don't follow the digital-to-analog audio source bit.

Also, can i also extend wifi while using the Airport Express for music. I do not mind buying another Airport express as long as it works. My understanding was Airport Extreme can also give you faster wifi base station. unless i am wrong.

    Let's try an example:

    • You would use iTunes (Mac or PC) or Music app (on an iOS device) to stream over a wireless connection to the AirPort Express.
    • You would connect the appropriate audio cable between the Express base station's audio port to the audio port on the iPod Hi-Fi.

The type of cable you use will be up to you as both the Express and the iPod Hi-Fi's audio ports support either analog or digital connections. Ideally, you will want to use a digital connection.

When streaming from either location, you just need to select the AirPort Express as the destination of the stream.

Yes, you can also extend a wireless network AND stream with the Express.
