Q: Photos album disappeared

Hello community,

I'm looking for some help with an iPhone 5 IOS 9.2.1

Recently all albums in photos disappeared and the photos are only viewable under photos --> moments.

This person had the exact same problem: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/177550/photos-album-disappeared

- Force quit the application does not resolve the problem

- Turning the phone off does not resolve the problem either.

- Making a back up in iTunes failed 3 times before a successful attempt.

     * I'm scared that if I restore from this back up it will fail and all data will be lost. Also as someone told in the thread I posted above it is most likely a mistake in the software which requires a fresh install of IOS to resolve.

All data except from videos/photos can be backed up with iCloud, there's not enough iCloud storage to do this for the videos/photos as well.

So how can I get all videos/photos from the iPhone or extract them from the back-up?

I'm not sure if using a third-party app is safe, is the so called application Syncios in the other thread advisable?

I'm not sure that I will be able to answer your question, but it would really be helpful if you stated how you are managing photos on your phone. I assume that these would have to be albums that you created on the phone itself. If that is the case, and if you backed up after the albums disappeared, you dont want to restore that backup since the albums are not in it.

No these are not albums created on the phone itself, I'm talking about the standard albums like "all photos" "screenshots" "favorites"

Are you using iCloud Photo Library? If you are, I believe that there is only one all encompassing album and the camera roll is gone.

I guess iCloud Photo Library is on, but isn't this the replacement of the camera roll after 8.1.3 or something?

For example it should look like this, however there is nothing over there now.

I Do not see Photo Stream which also disappears ahen you have iCloud Photo Library turned on. You can easily check this in Settings>iCloud>Photos>iCloud Photo Library>On. If it is turned on, I believe that is why the other albums are missing. If it is not turned on - do not turn it on. You dont want to do that at this point,

I still do not understand which direction you are going, yes it's turned on. But the above picture is simply an indicator how it should look like. My Photo Stream is turned off. Right now under albums there is nothing. Like this:

The direction that I was trying to go in was that I thought that iCloud Photo Library was causing the problems. Rather than continuing on like this, I will ask for help from some other higher level community members that are much better versed in the use of iCloud Photo library and with photos in general.

These are very knowledgable people so have a little patience for a little longer and hopefully one or two of them will pop in on the discussion.léonie and Winston Churchill  are two people that I have in mind.

Thanks a lot, any help is appreciated. It's a rather odd problem I must say.

The only thing that I've in mind that could have caused the problem is that the memory was full and photos were deleted to create space but something software wise went wrong.

No these are not albums created on the phone itself, I'm talking about the standard albums like "all photos" "screenshots" "favorites"

These albums are smart albums and are automatically created, if you are having photos on your iPhone, that are matching the constraints for the album.  If you have no videos, the "Video" album will nt show.  If you have no "Selfies" the "Autofotos" album will be hidden. It is a bad sign, that the "All Photos" album is not showing.  That means, that Photos cannot find any photo in the library that qualify the constraints.

Which photos are you seeing in the moments?  All photos you previously had?  Or only a few?

Are the photos JPEG or a special format?

Are the photos readable, when you open them from the moments?  Can you enlarge and edit them, or are they just the thumbnails?

As you are using iCloud Photo Library - do you have a computer as well?  Are your photos and albums visible at your iCloud webpage www.icloud.com?  Sign into iCloud on that webpage and open the Photos app. Are you seeing your Photos and albums?  Can you download the photos from there to make a backup on your computer?

Which photos are you seeing in the moments?

All photos and videos that were previously viewable under albums.

    All photos you previously had?

    Yes.

    Or only a few?

    All of them.

Are the photos JPEG or a special format?

No idea, the standard format that apple uses when taking a photo/video.

Are the photos readable, when you open them from the moments?

    Yes, they are viewable.

Can you enlarge and edit them, or are they just the thumbnails?

I have to ask this to my girlfriend, unfortunately she lives at the other side of the world so give me a few hours

As you are using iCloud Photo Library - do you have a computer as well?

iCloud Photo Library is on, however in total the photos and videos are over 5gb in space.

She has a laptop with windows 7.

Are your photos and albums visible at your iCloud webpage www.icloud.com?

Yes they are, but about 2k photos are missing because there's not enough space to back them up to iCloud.

She made a back up of those photos (iCloud Photos) downloading them all to her computer.

That is probably the problem.  When you use iCloud Photo Library, you need enough storage in iCloud to hold all your photos or your library will not be useable, until you do something about this.

How much free storage des she have on the iPhone?  Is it feasible to disable "Optimize Storage" to ensure all photos currently in iCloud download from iCloud back to the iPhone?

I would delete all photos from www.icloud.com, that have been saved to a computer.  If you delete from  www.icloud.com, the deletion will sync back to the iPhone and delete the photos there as well.  After you deleted from iCloud.com you should be seeing on the iPhone only the photos, that still need rescuing, because they never uploaded to iCloud. You could try to rescue these remaining photos by connecting the iPhone to a USB port and importing the photos to the PC directly. The originals should be on the iPhone, if "Optimize Storage" is disabled.

To free storage on iCloud see: Get help with your iCloud Photo Library - Apple Support

What happens when I go over my iCloud storage limit?

If you exceed your iCloud storage limit, photos and videos won't upload to iCloud and your library won’t stay up to date across your devices. To continue using iCloud Photo Library, upgrade your storage plan or reduce the amount of storage that you're using.

Reduce the storage for iCloud Photo Library by deleting photos and videos you don't want to keep from your iOS devices or on iCloud.com. Your device will immediately remove any photos and videos you delete and they won't be available for recovery in your Recently Deleted album.

If you're out of storage, your devices won't back up to iCloud, and new photos, videos, documents, and data won't stay up to date.

    Yes this is possible.

I asked her to check her settings again, apparently iCloud Photo Library is NOT on.

However My Photo Stream is and iCloud Photo Sharing is off.

This explains why she said that she found some photos on iCloud whereof she previously thought she lost them.

She has 500mb of free space, activating the iCloud Photo Library will maybe download some of the photos that are still on iCloud but not on the phone, however this is not enough for all of them. What's advisable to do?

I've been trying to figure out what a good option is to get the photos from the phone and do a fresh install of IOS.

The standard option form Windows is not working correctly,as doing only gets 123 photos from the phone, most of them are not even viewable.
