Q: New battery, disappointing runtime.

I've had the battery replaced in my MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2011)  1.8 GHz Intel Core i7 with 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3,  and I'm only getting 4-41/2 hours out of it, which is not much more than the battery it replaced.  I'm not doing very battery intensive stuff.  Email, internet (flash switched off), and I've turned down the screen brightness.

I'm sure I used to get much longer when the machine was new, is it possible that the incorrect capacity battery has been used and is there any way I can check?

I'm running El Capitan 10.11.3 (15D21) BTW.

TIA.

Susan

I've had a quick look at %CPU and kernel_task is top with 17.9%, but Time Machine is having the biggest impact under the Energy page - could it be that?

Not liking replying to my own reply, however back up has completed and I charged to 100% (green light on charger lead) and battery time remaining is showing at 3hrs/90% and it's been unplugged around 20mins.  Any suggestions?

Are you saying that CleanMyMac has be proven to reduce battery life and if yes by how much? Or do you just not like it?

    Thanks again for the help.

I'm saying it's pure crap. it will bork up your machine in more ways that one. Many here consider it malware. It's completely unnecessary and it does not work as advertised. It's sole purpose in life is to get you to pay for it and keep paying for it by scaring you into thinking something is wrong. Will it reduce battery life? Yes. By how much? Depends on how badly it's borked your system. Just get rid of it. Until you do, any further troubleshooting is pointless.

OK, removed it yesterday and zero impact on battery life so I guess it's not that .

However, I've just stopped Time Machine trying to do backups on battery power and that does seem to have made a positive impact in increasing battery life by over 2hrs within 10 mins of making the changes, and it's still going up .  69% and over 4hrs so far, so I think that might be it.

    Thanks for the help again.

    Susan

PS If this has solved it I'm going to try reinstalling CleanMyMac - rebel that I am, and will let you know if it does reduce the runtime

Third party applications such as CleanMyMac are totally unnecessary and are likely to compromise performance and even corrupt your MBP.  I strongly urge you NOT to reinstall it.  Let the MBP OSX do its job.

    Ciao.
