The drive may be failing. If you erase the drive and reformat it, it may fix the errors. To save your data try one of the below.

Pre El Capitan - Try using Disk Utility/Restore to copy the backup to a new location. Please note that this will reformat the destination partition.

El Capitan - Get an external drive with no data on it. Try booting into the Recovery Partition (command - R on a restart) and select the drive in Disk Utility, then Edit/Restore and select your internal drive in Restore from. This will likely reformat the external drive erasing all data.

Had the exact same problem.  My predicament was that the affected drive was a LaCie 6 TB external drive and I have not other drive with that kind of capacity to back it up to. I used Diskwarrior 4 to rebuild the disk directory and it solved the problem whereas Apple Disk Utilities could not. My data was intact and I could use my external drive as a bootable disk with El Capitan installed. Now I guess I'll look for a refurbished (i.e. Relatively cheap ...) 6 TB drive for backup or Time Machine... Good luck.
