Feb 25, 2016 6:00 PM in response to Rodkoby Courcoul,Which model is it? Not size, the year. Since it won't start, state the model code found on the bottom, or ask the cousin when he got it new.
BTW, the newest it could be is Late 2011, when that size was last produced.

Feb 25, 2016 6:12 PM in response to Rodkoby Courcoul,★HelpfulWhen you get the date, compare with the requirements that CMCSK linked. If purchased new from Apple, they will only sell you the latest model for the date. Refurbished or from less than kosher resellers, well..

Feb 25, 2016 6:52 PM in response to Rodkoby KimUserName,Hi Rodeo:
The power supply from your 13" Macbook Pro is only a 60 Watt supply.
The 17" Macbook Pro needs an 85 watt power adapter.

Assuming your 17" Macbook Pro is a mid/late 2007 here is the power adapter and battery you need.
You can check on the OWC website for a battery and power supply.
Here is the battery you need. http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/apple_laptop/batteries/MacBook_Pro_17
And here is the power adapter. http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Apple/MC556LLA/

There use to be a Knowledge Base article suggesting that was not a good idea = "If the battery is removed from a MacBook or MacBook Pro, the computer will automatically reduce the processor speed. This prevents the computer from shutting down if it demands more power than the A/C adapter alone can provide."
