Feb 26, 2016 9:34 AM in response to peterfrommoffatby ChitlinsCC,Things don't start happening suddenly for no reason
Think back to just before you started experiencing this about what may have changed... Add software? Update some? Anything at all - equipment, environment, etc.
Sometimes (often) the built-in search of ASC & Apple Support docs is less than satisfactory
But Google Site Search to the rescue! - take a look at these results > https://www.google.com/search?q=aperture+map+site:Apple.com&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

Feb 26, 2016 9:41 AM in response to peterfrommoffatby léonie,Apple did not renew the contract with Google. The places are no longer working in iPhoto and Aperture, at least not in the older versions, that are still using the Google maps. Aperture 3.5.1 and later are using Apple's own map server, but with the older Aperture versions you need a bit of patching to do, get Places feature working again.
Have a look at my user tip: Patching Aperture 3.4.5 to make Places work again
the easy way to get the places working again would be to update to an Aperture version, that is using Apple'S maps, that are working. But that would require Aperture 3.5.1 or 3.6, and at least MacOS X 10.9 Mavericks.

Feb 26, 2016 11:20 AM in response to ChitlinsCCby léonie,It is cotton-x to the rescue.
It is a tricky fix and requires a lot of determination to go that way.
You have to sign up as a Google developer, generate your own API key to be able to access the Google servers from an application.
Then open the Aperture application bundle, track down the file /Applications/Aperture 3.4.5.app/Contents/Resources/googleMap.html inside the application bundle, edit this file so the javascript will use your API code instead of Apple's code.
It is worth it, however. I can finally use the beautiful maps with terrain data again and are not limited to the newer maps with much less detail and no terrain data.

Feb 26, 2016 11:57 AM in response to léonieby ChitlinsCC,Yikes! ( for most folk, I'm an old hand though - alas, with no need for Aperture { PShopper from WAY back } nor the headaches anymore = reTIRED )
I have read that Apple Maps is an 'ongoing endeavor' not scheduled for 'completion' until sometime in 2018 > Link to this post
Habe einen wunderschönen Abend

Feb 26, 2016 12:15 PM in response to ChitlinsCCby léonie,That is interesting, but if Apple is collecting street views, it will still be maps for navigation and traffic, like the Tom Tom maps they are using now, and not detailed geographic maps, useful for photographers who want to geocode landscape photos from somewhere off the beaten tracks. The maps in the new Phots for Mac app are even worse. They are only useful for people who never leave the car.

Feb 26, 2016 12:27 PM in response to léonieby ChitlinsCC,Si, Senorita... I only referred to the article because it cites Apple's statement of the timeline for "completion"(???)
Re-inventing the wheel to *compete* will likely be a taller order than simply 'gathering data'
Satellite data? Hard to beat this 'mature' tech...

If any company can do it, Apple can - if they want to do it.

Still might 'take a while' Rome was not built in a day!

Feb 26, 2016 1:12 PM in response to léonieby peterfrommoffat,Interesting because when I try to open places the satellite map actually appears for a couple of seconds with the pins in the correct places. Then is just dies and I can get no further action from it. It is clearly trying to access the map info, but does not sustain it. I am reluctant to play around with Aperture because it holds many of my photographs, and as a photographer their loss would be significant. I do have a back up system of course, but always try to live a simple life.

Feb 26, 2016 1:14 PM in response to peterfrommoffatby léonie,Would it be feasible for you to update to El Capitan and Aperture 3.6? That uses Apple's own servers and the Places work.

Feb 26, 2016 2:52 PM in response to peterfrommoffatby ChitlinsCC,sounds like Google may be sending a "kill window" command somehow(??)
You still haven't answered the "what event preceded..." question (unless the forum bug 'Phantom Posts' is plaguing me)

Feb 27, 2016 2:14 AM in response to ChitlinsCCby peterfrommoffat,So far as I can tell nothing preceded this change. No updates, nothing. It just happened, though I agree it was not magic, so some glitch occurred . Insofar as upgrading to something like El Capitan I am not willing to go down that path because I would then lose Photoshop, a very important tool for me. Apple seem to want to push everyone to use cloud systems, when I prefer to keep my data where I can find it and not rely on hard drives in another part of the world.
