Q: Only one memory slot works at a time

I'm trying to upgrade the RAM in my

MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.4 13" Mid-2010 Specs

Mid-2010 13" - MC374LL/A - MacBookPro7,1 - A1278 - 2351*

I bought this RAM: Crucial 8GB Kit (4GBx2) DDR3/DDR3L 1066 MT/s (PC3-8500) SODIMM 204-Pin Mac Memory CT2K4G3S1067M / CT2C4G3S1067M

When I install both of the 4GB modules, About This Mac reports that I only have 4GB total of RAM, and the Memory tab shows that I have one slot empty. So, I thought I might have a bad slot. I removed one of the modules and got the same report. I moved the one module to the other slot and got the same report. So both slots work, but the system will only register one of them at a time, it seems. I've tested both of the new modules, so they're both good.

I wonder if I should try to workaround this problem by ordering an 8gb module from OWC (this mid-2010 7.1 version supposedly supports 16GB, contrary to the info from Apple).

Any help so much appreciated.

Thank you.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)
