Q: I have upgraded from Snow Leopard to OSX El Capitan as the info said my 2009 Mac could be updated.  However I have been having a lot of problems and it is extremely slow among other things.  Should I have upgraded to Yosemite or something else first?

I have a 2009 IMac and had Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and IPhotos, latest version.  While trying to use something new I wanted to download (don't remember what now) my system said I had to upgrade to OSX El Capitan, so I did.  Since then I have had nothing but problems, the computer is extremely slow in opening anything, and the Photos is terrible --- I can't do anything with it and I hate it!!  I much preferred IPhotos.  My question is, should I have upgraded to Yosemite or something else before going directly to El Capitan?  If so, what can I do now to remedy the situation?  Thanks for any advice.

No, but you should have insured all the software you have installed, especially system modifications, was compatible with El Capitan.

You can use iPhoto, but you should get used to Photos as iPhoto will no longer be updated and may stop working at some point.

If you run this program, it will show what is installed. Post the output here and we may be able to offer advice on what is causing your problems

Thanks very much for your reply Barney.  I have run EtreCheck  and will proceed to try to do what it says, but would be grateful for any further advice.  As you can probably tell, I am not great at technical computer problems .   I've attached my results.  Thanks again.

    You have several problems:

    1. You have adware on your computer.
    2. You have MacKeeper installed, which no computer should go near, even with a 50 ft. barge pole.
    3. You have something called "Secure Mac Cleaner" installed, which you don't need.

To get rid of the adware, you have two options.  You can either download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac to get rid of it, a program which was developed by a trusted and respected poster here, or you can remove it manually.  Both MacKeeper and Secure Mac Cleaner need to be completely uninstalled according to the developer's instructions.

Thanks very much.  I suspected having malware, but wasn't sure how to get rid of it.  Also, I don't have an anti-virus on my machine, what is the best anti-virus for Mac? Tks

First you have an early 2008 iMac not a 2009 model. Second as noted above you need to remove Mackeeper http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/

You need to remove the adware, just click the remove link next to the words "one adware file found".

Uninstall Secure Mac Cleaner per the developers instructions.

Finally El Capitan runs better on older Macs with more than 4Gb of ram. Get rid of the problem software first then evaluate your ram by using Activity Monitor Use Activity Monitor on your Mac - Apple Support

    There isn't any necessary.

Adware is "legitimate" software, not Malware. You actually installed it yourself, but you probably didn't realize that you were doing it.

See here: How to install adware

You don't need an anti-virus program on your computer.  There are no viruses currently in the wild that can do any damage to OS X.  At this point, they are unnecessary.
